为什么会误解成as many as呢？

double：to become, or make something become, twice as much or as many（使）加倍；是…的两倍
是数量的加倍，不是苹果本身。

回楼主的问题，OG的意思是这句话可以错误的理解成 如下：
the same amount of acreage produces double......  produces是名词，double是动词，当然后面的是错的，但如果根据OG的解释可以翻译成，
相同英亩的产量double了，这里的double是动词
