New Partnerships Expand Duke's Presence in China

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University has forged two new cooperative partnerships in China which will significantly increase the university's presence in that country and create new opportunities for education, research and public service.

The partnership agreements were formally announced today (Friday) during Duke President Richard H. Brodhead's trip to China, which culminated in a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a planned Duke University campus in the city of Kunshan. Kunshan, located in the Yangtze River Delta, boasts one of the fastest-growing economies in China.

The Duke-Kunshan campus, a partnership between the university and the municipal government, will include a five-building teaching, research and residential center built by the municipal government.

Duke's Fuqua School of Business will lead the first phase, which will focus on executive MBA and non-degree executive education programs, a pre-experience management training master’s degree, training of Ph.D. students and the recruitment of top faculty. Duke's educational partner in this venture is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of the leading universities in China.

President Brodhead signs the Kunshan agreement.  Below, singers Shanghai Opera House Chorus perform at the signing.

The campus, which will eventually encompass 200 acres, will feature classroom and meeting space, faculty offices, conference center space, an incubator building offering wet and dry laboratory space and faculty office space, and lodging for students, faculty and staff.

Construction of the five buildings, designed by the architectural firm Gensler, will begin immediately and is expected to be complete in 2011.

"We look forward to working with the Ministry of Education, the government of Kunshan, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University to support education and business development in this most dynamic region of China," Brodhead said.

"The Duke-Kunshan campus will create great learning opportunities for our students, and represents a new model of international educational collaboration."

Future activity on the Duke-Kunshan campus will include programs from Duke's schools of public policy and environment, and its global health institute, among others, as education and research opportunities are developed.

Brodhead, Provost Peter Lange and Fuqua Dean Blair Sheppard also formalized an agreement between Fuqua and Shanghai Jiao Tong's Antai College of Economics and Management.

The schools will partner to train Ph.D. students and seek to develop executive MBA and Master of Management Studies programs based in China.

Brodhead and Sheppard also were featured guests at Shanghai Jiao Tong's annual New Year's Forum, where Sheppard delivered the keynote address on the future of financial services in China.

"The world will increasingly rely on university graduates and faculty members who have been trained in global settings," Sheppard said. "It is our true pleasure to enter into partnerships that will help China address its immediate needs for talent development, while also creating unique opportunities to educate future leaders."

Duke already has a significant and historical connection to China. More than 600 Chinese students are currently enrolled at Duke, and the university operates a number of collaborative programs with Chinese institutions in medicine, global health, law and international development.

The new partnerships extend Duke's already significant global activity that ranges from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore, which opened a state-of-the-art campus last year, to more than 300 affiliations with international institutions for education, research and service programs. 看来Duke Fuqua商学院要把他的Master of Management移植到中国,这个管理硕士原来是专门为了和韩国首尔国立大学合办搞的双学位,首尔大学MBA + 杜克Master。

In a recent interview with McKinsey, Blair Sheppard said the following. It is obvious that Duke is taking a very aggressive approach to globalize the Fuqua MBA.

Duke University Sets Up Dubai Campus at DIFC

Under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid

University Partners with the DIFC Centre of Excellence

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, DIFC Centre of Excellence today signed an agreement with Duke University, one of the United States’ top ranked universities, to open the latter’s Dubai Campus and deliver business and policy education programmes in Dubai.

The partnership was announced at an event held today at the DIFC Conference Centre to mark the launch of the University’s Dubai Campus. The event was attended by HH Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,,HE Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, Governor of the Dubai International Financial Centre; Faten Hani, CEO of the DIFC Centre of Excellence and Blair Sheppard, Dean of Duke’s Fuqua School of Business.

Under the agreement, Duke University will establish a campus at the DIFC Centre of Excellence, which provides a platform for global educational institutions to provide executive and professional education programmes to students in the region. The global programmes of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, including the Duke MBA - Cross Continent, the Duke MBA - Global Executive MBA, the Advanced Management Program and the Global Leadership Program will run at the DIFC Centre of Excellence.

HE Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman said: “As part of the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed, education plays a major role in both Dubai’s and the UAE’s future growth strategy. Education is also critical to the Middle East region’s ability to sustain the momentum of its growth. The Dubai International Financial Centre seeks to create a large pool of global education and learning resources to help develop the leaders and skilled professionals necessary for the UAE and the region to meet the challenges and tap the opportunities of today’s rapidly changing economy. Duke University’s programmes delivered at the DIFC Centre of Excellence will contribute to our effort to offer a wider choice of global educational opportunities to the region.”

The University’s new programmes will build on its existing relationship with Dubai. The institution already has a strong partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Leadership Programme.

Faten Hani said: "We are delighted that Duke University and The Fuqua School of Business have selected the DIFC Centre of Excellence for one of its global campuses. The DIFC Centre of Excellence seeks to partner with global educational institutional like Duke University to provide world-class learning and development resources that can help professionals in the region enhance their competencies in today’s rapidly evolving economy. With its vast experience in providing high-quality professional education, Duke University will add a lot of value to the pool of global educational resources available at the DIFC Centre of Excellence."

Duke and the DIFC Centre of Excellence will establish joint research centres, which will allow Duke’s faculty and graduate students to pursue research topics related to the UAE and the Middle East while contributing to scholarship within the UAE.

Duke also intends to offer a one-year Masters Degree in Management Studies in Government at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Programme for Leadership Development (MBRPLD). The programme will be tailored to the educational needs of government officials throughout the Middle East, and will draw on the expertise of Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy.

Duke President Richard H. Brodhead said: “Partnering with these prominent UAE institutions will allow Duke University to provide its students and faculty with unparalleled learning opportunities, while making significant contributions to the development of the region.”

The DIFC Centre of Excellence and MBRPLD partnerships will create a significant embedded presence in Dubai for The Fuqua School of Business, which in September 2008 announced plans to expand its operations to Dubai, London, New Delhi, St. Petersburg and Shanghai. Duke first became engaged with the Dubai Executive Office through the Mohammed Bin Rashid Program for Leadership Development, which was designed and delivered by Duke Corporate Education.

Blair Sheppard, Dean and Professor of Management at The Fuqua School of Business said: “We all have much to learn from the experience of Dubai and the greater Middle East. Meaningful student and faculty engagement in the region is a critical component of our success as a leading institution of business education.”
