More rules of writing.
The first batch of rules were simple must-do rules that help an applicant communicate clearly and effectively. But one can communicate very clearly, and still lack the tension and suspense-building that makes a good piece of writing engaging, interesting, and a good read. I dug up my old rule-list from UChicago, and bring you another set of rules for good story-telling:
1) Start your story with why a situation SEEMS to be easy to handle, and well under control. In my previous paragraph, I reminded you why my first set of rules were very useful.
2) Then add some tension. Cast some doubt in your readers' mind. Why were my first set of rules not enough? Why is your situation not as simple as it seems?
3) Next, summarise how the situation should ideally be resolved. In my case, I should ideally give you a different set of rules for story-telling. Maybe you ideally need to come up with a new, creative way to do things that nobody has ever thought of before.
4) Last, tell me how you're going to try to get to this ideal situation. I dug up my old rule-set from UChicago. What did you choose to do?
5) Repeat, if necessary. Your approach (#4) may initially fail- as tends to happen in a complicated situation. How did you reevaluate what was again a calm but impossible-to-solve situation (point 1 again) to find a potential way out (point 2) to reach a new final conclusion that is ideal? (point 3)
There are two ways to apply this set of rules:
1) Summarise rules 1 to 4 in the first paragraph (like what I did above). This works better for longer essays, because it can be easy for readers to lose focus. For longer essays, avoid #5 unless you're really confident in your writing ability.
2) Develop each rule over the course of the essay. This works better for shorter essays, where you want to spend less time summarising, and going straight into what you did, how it worked/ failed, and why.
This set of rules is complicated. Feel free to ask clarifying questions if needed.
Good luck in all your essay writing! |
