Message from HKUST about Mainland Chinese job placement last year

Dear XXX,

Of the 36 full-time students graduated in 2003, 6 joined the Program from
Mainland China.     Three of them have taken up jobs in HK and the other
three returned to Beijing and Guangzhou. Their employers are Thornton
Global Wealth Mgt, Lynns Concepts Ltd, and China Inspection Company in
Hong Kong where as the China employers are China State Construction,
Bejing Asset Mgt Ltd, and Power Distribution System co. Ltd.

The MBA placement office facilitates company recruiters in the
arrangements of talks and on-campus presentations, job postings and
online resumes search.     It also provides students with the resources and
skills to pursue their career goals. Specifically the career services
include the following:-

- Publication of 2MMBA resume books,     one for graduate placement
and the other for summer internship

- Employer Outreach - promote the MBA Program and MBA students'
profiles to the business community

- Posting of permanent and summer job openings and relevant
information to MBA students

- Provides an online platform for students to post their CVs to
allow on-line search by recruiting companies

- Several company database with business contacts for students to
identify leads information

- Invite employers to make presentations about their organisations
and the career opportunities for MBAs

- Online MBA Alumni Directory with work information to
facilitate career networking

- MBA Career Library with company databases, company
literature, business directories, books on effective cover letters,
Resumes and interview questions, business journals and magazines

- Career development workshops to enhance students' job search
skills and interviewing techniques. The topics include Networking,
Self assessment, Resume writing, Cover letter writing, Effective
interviewing, Development of job search strategies.

In addition to the placement efforts in HK, the MBA Program has hired a
full-time representative based in Shanghai with the primary functions to
promote the business school programs and introduce HKUST student
profiles to the business community and recruiters in Shanghai and
Beijing.     We are confident that with these new initiatives, we are able to
put HKUST MBAs on the radar of major recruiters in China and they would
put HKUST Business School at top of their list of schools to recruit from.

I hope the above answered your questions.

Best regards,

Doris CHAN

"The students graduated in 2003" means "the students started the program in 2002". In 2002 neither CUHK nor HKUST enrolled many Mainland students due to the government policy. But starting from 2003, HK schools can enroll a larger number of mainland students. For example, CUHK enrolled nearly 25 students last year, while HKUST enrolled almost the same number. 2003 is not a very good year for MBAs, but there are still 3 HKUST MBA graduates from the mainland    find jobs in HK.

HKUST has started to take some action to improve their job placement in the mainland China. They have set up an office in Shanghai to facilitate the connections with the companies there.

Please provide more points, thank you.
