September 16 Unemployed! Do I have a chance? It is hard to believe that our Round 1 deadline is just one month from today. I am always amazed at how quickly this date sneaks up on us each year. So for all of you out there targeting Round 1, I hope these blogs have been useful to you. If I have not addressed a particular topic of interest for you, please let me know. My musings are generally quite random. In the meantime, I thought I would address a very important question during these economic times: Do I stand a chance in getting admitted if I am currently unemployed (or underemployed)? The simple answer is yes! Many people have been displaced over the past year through no fault of their own, and finding a new job in their target industry/function has been equally difficult. So what can you do? First, take stock of what you have learned about yourself during this time. For many of you, this may have shaken your confidence and impacted what you want to do with your life/career going forward. Help us to understand this in your application. Second, let us know what you have been doing with your newfound freedom and what motivates you. Are you taking classes, volunteering your services, traveling, etc.? There is no right or wrong activity, but opportunities that you have leveraged during this period in your life and career. For those of you who were lucky enough to find another job, you may be underemployed. Translated, you found a job to help pay the bills but it is not in the industry, function or location of your choice. Again, help us to understand your choices and motivations. As you’ve probably learned by now, we’re so much more interested in how you have coped with these surprises and what you’ve learned about yourself. -- by 会员 tgif2008 (2009/12/12 21:31:59)
Is this from the blog of an admission officer? Seems to be very enlightening! Thanks for sharing! |
