Clearly, the customer’s main concern is the convenience afforded by one-stop shopping. The surest way to increase our profits over the next couple of years, therefore, is to add a clothing department along with an automotive supplies and repair shop. We should also plan to continue adding new departments and services, such as a restaurant and a garden shop, in subsequent years. Being the only store in the area that offers such a range of services will give us a competitive advantage over other local stores.”
In this plan, author plans to continue adding new departments and services in order to satisfy customers’ mainly concern of convenience of one-stop shopping. In support this plan, he points out the Megamart sales increasing 20 percent after they added pharmacy department. This argument seems to be convincing at first glance. But after a second thought, the argument is defective for some reasons.
At first place, the argument bases on a false analogy. The increasing sales due to pharmacy department does not guarantee the sales increase after other new departments are added. There might be no other drug store near the neighborhood therefore people have to go to Megamart to buy drug. That is the reason why sales increase. But there would probably be many clothing stores nearby Magamart. So, even the Megamart adds a clothing department, sales increase does not surely happen because other clothing stores might have satisfied people’s need already. People do not necessarily buy in the Megamart.
Next, the author commits a fallacy of causal oversimplification. He assumes that as long as adding new department, sales would grow. No evidence supports this assumption. There are also several factors which would also cause sales increase. For example, when the Megmart added its new pharmacy department, a policy attracted a lot of people to migrate to the district and caused population increase. Whether there is new department or not, more people there, more grocery needed. This situation would lead grocery sales grow. If the policy is canceled or due to other reasons the number of residents decreases, even though the Megamart adds new departments and services, the sales would not certainly increase.
In conclusion, the plan of the Megamart was established on an unsound base and was vulnerable. Several factors could weaken the plan and made it a failure. Oversimplification and false analogy undermined the plan. To strengthen the plan, the author had to have a careful and causal link between the various factors. |
