我觉得是then多了，已经有了个连词but，而placed with others of their species是修饰的成分，忽略。那么then在这里是什么意思呢。除非but后面跟的是个句子，再加then.要不然连个连词在一起肯定是不对的

我觉得这句话要突出当locusts与其同类在一起时，他们才变得兴奋的意思。如果换成E，就没有当...的时候的意思了，变成了状语伴随状态的意思，句子意思改变了，这是个大错误。
另外E中then多余了。

我觉得是含义上的问题，这里用when状语从句比较合适，表示某一特定情况下的反映，-ed伴随状语读起来总是有些奇怪
