B them，they指代不清；而且逻辑主语they placing them...不太对劲，因为两个只带应该是一致的

我觉得是then多了，已经有了个连词but，而placed with others of their species是修饰的成分，忽略。那么then在这里是什么意思呢。除非but后面跟的是个句子，再加then.要不然连个连词在一起肯定是不对的
