The advantages of being a professor in the US, and only in the US:


1) After getting tenure, you have a life-time insurance. Then you can set up your own company if you can, selling consulting and teaching services on top of your university job. No body can fire you and you really have the freedom to do almost whatever you want to do.


2) Your income is at least as good as those of guys in industries, most likely, even higher.


3) Your social status is much higher than a director of, say, Microsoft, or than a consultant somewhere.


4) If you really want to develop your ideas and thoughts, contributing to mankind, you cannot ever get a better job than a permanent professor.


5) If you are not good at enterprise politics, a researcher position is more suitable.


6) "Excellence is a kind of habbit". If you want to excellent for the rest of your life, you get to do so.

If you don't want to do research, don't go for a PhD.


Other PhDs, such as Econ PhD, may end up working with IB, international agency or consulting firms. But almost all DBAs will find their positions in B-school. Because a faculty position in B-school is much higher and more secure than any other job. No one will resist its temptation. And if you don't want this, why spend five more years doing something not very useful in the industry.

    读商学院的PHD很苦，比一般的专业（比如cs）都要苦，少说5年，多则6年，需要修的课程特别多。前途一般都是做professor，但要熬5－6年的tenure才可以。在tenure期间的辛苦程度不亚于读PHD。所以要读PHD就要做好充分的心理准备，在大约12年时间里没有自己的life，毫不夸张。我的一个朋友就是因为每天精神压力都特别大，长期腹泻。我的商学院PHD生涯也半途而废了，因为尽管我知道phd出来以后各方面待遇会很好，但真的感觉得不偿失，不想把那么多宝贵的时间致力于自己并不钟情的research。我劝想读phd的朋友，在作出决定以前仔细斟酌。一家之言也。

是的，一个朋友在明尼苏达读B-PHD,每天学习14个小时
