comp确实是让人退层皮的苦差。 但有意思的是，有些牛校似乎不大淘汰人，比如某些放羊管理的学校，老师对学生也不太重视。
另外comp似乎也要看director的心情和抱负，如果比较mean或者想提高学校排名，他估计就得下狠心砍人了。
不过事情都在变的，可能换了个director，就由易变难了，平时表现也不能太消极。
混口饭吃不容易啊，publish or perish...

也就是说 如果假定退学都是因为学术不过关 牛校踢人不一定更厉害

Actually, it is not a big deal for some people who are not sure an academic career, but it is for the other. Recently, a doctoral student in MIT Sloan chose an extreme mean, not sure what reason tho:

A doctoral student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology died after falling from a campus building Tuesday.

        

Han Duy Nguyen, who was studying marketing at MIT’s Sloan School of
Management, died after falling from building E19 on the school’s
Cambridge, Mass., campus, MIT said late Tuesday in a news release.
There were no other details surrounding the incident as of Wednesday
morning.

        

Nguyen was 25-years old.

        

“We deeply mourn the loss of this member of our community, and our
hearts go out to his friends and family,” Vice Chancellor and Dean for
Graduate Education Steven R. Lerman said in a statement.
