关于increase的用法

前两天在书上看到这样的一道题

As evidence of sushi's drastically increasing popularity, the most recent studies show that the number of sushi restaurants in the state increased by more than 3 times in the past 5 years.

A   increased by more than 3 times

B   increased by more than triple

C   was increased more than 3 times

D   has more than tripled

E   was more than tripled

答案给出的是D，我当时看得时候觉得选A

后面给出的解释上写着 a number doesn't increase by more than 3 times.是说主语是数量，不能用increase by吗？应该可以把？那么是3 times有问题吗？

可能这不是一本像OG一样很权威的书，但是看到这题我就对于Increase，X times, double, triple 等的用法很是困惑，请帮忙解答一下可以吗？

要說two times時, 最好用twice/double
要說three times時, 最好用triple

D最简洁，符合简洁原则！

double ，triple等词只有主动。。。不能被动！

increase一般做名字的几率比较大，have an increase in sth

在表倍增的情況下, double/triple/etc會比較好, 因為很清楚知道是什麼在倍增.
A的increased by more than 3 times不是很清楚, 3 times of what?

有点不太理解版主说的话，可能是我太笨了……

我怎么觉得A的more than 3 times就是形容未划线部分的number的。

sorry, 修正:
"be more than 3 times"後要接名詞 or "of what..."
"increased by more than 3 times"後可以不用接任何東東.
so yes, "more than tripled"比"increased by more than 3 times" concise.

Choice A is faulty because an adverb such as twice cannot function as an object of the preposition by.
                B distorts the sentence's meaning, stating that the number of engineering degrees conferred increased on more than two distinct occasions. D's passive verb was ... doubled suggests without warrant that some unnamed agent increased the number of engineering degrees. The past perfect tense in E, had... doubled, is inappropriate unless the increase in engineering degrees is specifically being viewed as having occurred further back in the past than some subsequent event. Choice C is best.

今天看OG10的时候看得了这道题，应该是对这道题有了更好的解释了。介词by后面不能加副词twice！

補一句, "increased by X times"不是錯.
NYTimes上的example:
If your wealth is suddenly increased by 100 times, the other computers notice it and quit.
