Hi diudiu, thank you for your kind reply. Here are more questions:

What concentration do you select?

Do you have a specific career goal in IT industry?

What do you think is the most important to get the scholarship?

Do you have a manager title?

Thank you so much and look forward to your answer! You know, your reply may make my head up.

Are you in NY? If yes we may want to contact to each other if you don't mind having another diudiu-fan . Thanks again.

Finance + Product Management + Entrepreneurship

Do you have a specific career goal in IT industry?

I don’t know if my career goal is specific enough, but basically I want to move up the corporate ladder and eventually run my own business.
What do you think is the most important to get the scholarship?

For NYU, you don’t need to apply separately for scholarship. They automatically consider you for scholarship with their admission decision. So I can’t say much on that. I guess it relies on the overall strength of your application, your contribution to the diversity of the student body, etc. I don’t have super-high scores, but I guess I added something to the diversity ;).

Do you have a manager title?

I only have a team lead title, no manager title.

Thank you so much and look forward to your answer! You know, your reply may make my head up.

You are welcome J

diudiu,

Congrats! I didn't see your post earlier, sorry I ask questions so late. In case you see this post, can you please share with us your positioning strategy or other things that you think important in    your    Stern    application? I happen to have the same gmat score,    the same undergraduate major,        and the same work experience as yours, but I am shooting for the Stern's part-time program, which has a May deadline. So I am    eager to    find clues for the essays. How did you write the leadership or constructive criticism essay? What areas do you cover in the describing-self essay? Do you know any areas that Sterm emphasize more than others? I guess there must be something you've done right. Could you please share your ideas, such as the diversity you mentioned in last few posts?

Thanks in advance.

Glad to know you. I don’t know if my case is representative enough to figure out Stern’s preference, but I can share my thoughts with you. For Stern, as you can tell from the essay topics, creativity is important to them. I have a patent so I wrote about it (how I came up the idea, how I implemented it, and what differences it made) in the describing-self essay (creativity). Based on my school research, teamwork and leadership are the other two attributes that Stern values. For diversity, I guess the fact that I have been an entrepreneur, and I worked with teams representing more than 6 countries adds to the class diversity. Being a female in the IT industry might also be an advantage.

Thanks for your kind offer, I might need your help if I decided to go to Stern. Best wishes for your application.

diudiu,

<p>Wow, very insightful comments. Thanks a lot. I admit I have a weakness-I tend to ask
way too many questions, but I can't help. So if you feel overwhelmed by my nonsense,
just give me a shout. <br>

<p>For your describing-self essay, what other areas, such as characteristics, did you
cover besides your patent? How did you describe your patent work without techie
jargons? Maybe it's finance related?<br>

<p>I am still perplexed by how you match your intended area of concentration with your
background. Both IT and finance are very specialized. How did you justify that you
want to focus on finance without leaving IT two years down the road, even if you are
working in IT for a financial comapny? A focus on Entrepreneurship would be more natural
given your exposure to it. How is your experience related to finance? Are you working
for financial company or you worked on financial software? I worked as a partner in a
corporate finance software company many years ago, and the experience was before my
master in a US top 10 CS, after which I worked 5 years in network and software industry.
So     I feel a little bit far-fetched to relate finance as my future focus, although I do
want to gain financial background and maybe open a fiancial software shop. I guess Stern
would love candidates with finance background or with finance at least as a focus. Do you
think, using your smart brain, that I would be better off listing finance as a focus?
Bear in mind that part-time programs don't like job-hoppers.<br>

<p>Well, too much detail. Could you shed some lights on your entrepreneurship background.
How recent did you start your company? Still operating? Also what are your ideas for
your leadership essay? Since you are a team lead, I guess you unavoidably described
your team-leading experience at work. But I feel doing so will make it difficult not to
overlap the experience with what your recommendators would like to say. How did you
handle this situation?<br>

<p>Ok, enough. Maybe it's easier to talk. If you feel so, please email me your phone number
and a good time to call you. By the whay, what other schools you are waiting for?
I live within 1 hour from either Stern, Columbia, or Wharton. Feel free to let
me know if you plan to come to NY-PA area and need help. <br>

<p>Thanks!

<p>For your describing-self essay, what other areas, such as characteristics, did you
cover besides your patent? that's a difficult question, I don't know whether I can finger-point the characteristics. I'm sure you have some attributes unique to youself, so just show that. For me, I showed the side of me which is somewhat risk-taking, tenacious, and passionate. How did you describe your patent work without techie
jargons? the patent is not really complicated, I just described the general function of it. Maybe it's finance related?<br> It's not finance related.

<p>I am still perplexed by how you match your intended area of concentration with your
background. Both IT and finance are very specialized. How did you justify that you
want to focus on finance without leaving IT two years down the road, even if you are

Bear in mind that part-time programs don't like job-hoppers.<br> I don't think Stern only likes people from financial background or concentration, every school want diversity. I think IT/Entrepreneurship is fine, the most important thing is to make your career plan reasonable, achievable and natural. I know there are chinese students with IT background or concentration at Stern.

<p>Well, too much detail. Could you shed some lights on your entrepreneurship background.
How recent did you start your company? Still operating? Also what are your ideas for
your leadership essay? It's three years ago, no longer operating. However, you do learn some lessons from this kind of experience and that is what matters.

Since you are a team lead, I guess you unavoidably described
your team-leading experience at work. But I feel doing so will make it difficult not to
overlap the experience with what your recommendators would like to say. How did you
handle this situation?<br> Since my supervisor wrote my recommendation, I don't know what examples she used in her letter, but I believe it's better not to use the same cases in essays and ROL. It will look like you have few achievements/examples to talk about.

diudiu,

Thank you for your help. I totally agree what you told me -- you confirmed what
I am thinking.

But I am still have no clue about the describe-self essay. One more question:
How did you organize the essay?(are you really describing yourself from many
different angles or you just tell a few stories that demonstrated your promising
characteristics? I understand you told your great patent story, did you tell other
things such as community service? Basically could you share with us what contents
you put into the essay to show you are a multi-dimensional person?)

Or maybe what's the best strategy to write the describe-self essay? I found no
essay tutorial talking about describe-self essay, so I don't know what are the
appropriate(read: best) contents to be included.

Oh, sorry, one FINAL question: What did you put in the optional essay and what are
the best contents to include?(We know something not covered in other essays, but what?)

Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it.
