Like the grassy fields and old pastures that the upland sandpiper needs for feeding and nesting when it returns in May after wintering in the Argentine Pampas, the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in farming practices.

A. the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in 虽然此选项like后内容与 主句主语对比上没有问题 vanishing现在分词做后置定语 但是这个要注意未划线部分的it 说明此鸟是要用单数 而且表达上不好 去掉vanishing 后置定语后是the sandpipers is a result of XXX不仅主谓不一致 也不可以说sandpipers is a result 而应该说某某事情是某某result of XXX

B. the bird itself is vanishing in the northeastern United States as a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in 完美

C. that the birds themselves are vanishing in the northeastern United States is due to residential and industrial development and changes to 开头来个that主语从句 不能和Like后面的grassy fields and old pastures有效对比

D. in the northeastern United States, sandpipers’ vanishing is due to residential and industrial development and to changes in对比对象不对等 grassy fields and pastures与sandpipers' vanishing

E. in the northeastern United States, the sandpipers’ vanishing, a result of residential and industrial development and changing同D并且没有主句

Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood, are now drawing solid conclusions about how the human brain grows and how babies acquire language.

A. Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood, are amassed这个动作发生在drawing前面 用having amassed正合适 大家去前面帖子翻一下Laotou总结的3道verb form题 73、74、75

B. Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth of knowledge about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood over the past twenty years, and are 状语位置的改变引起歧义 这里and多余

C. Neuroscientists amassing a wealth of knowledge about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood over the past twenty years, and are 去掉了having不能表达amassed的动作在drawing前面 状语位置的改变引起歧义 and 多余

D. Neuroscientists have amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood,

E. Neuroscientists have amassed, over the past twenty years, a wealth of knowledge about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood,

Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than are fungi, in the form of carbon dioxide, and converting it to energy-rich sugars.

A. Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than are fungi,

B. Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi,

C. Plants are more efficient than fungi at acquiring carbon,

D. Plants, more efficient than fungi at acquiring carbon,

E. Plants acquire carbon more efficiently than fungi,

in the form of carbon dioxide应该修饰C里的carbon,而不是A里的fungi.

Q3.

Scientists have made genetic modifications to cotton to increase its resistance to insect pests. According to farmers’ report, the amount of insecticide needed per acre to control insect pests was only slightly lower for those who tried the modified seed than for those who did not. Therefore, since the modified seed costs more than ordinary seed without producing yields of higher market value, switching to the modified seed would be unlikely to benefit most cotton farmers economically.

Which of the following would it be most useful to know in order to evaluate the argument?

A.      Whether farmers who tried the modified cotton seed had ever tried growing other crops from genetically modified seed.

B.       Whether the insecticides typically used on ordinary cotton tend to be more expensive than insecticides typically used on other crops.

C.      Whether for most farms who grow cotton it is their primary crop

D.      Whether the farmers who have tried the modified seed planted as many acres of cotton, on average, as farmers using the ordinary seed did.

E.       Whether most of the farmers who tried the modified seed did so because they had previously had to use exceptionally large quantities of insecticide.

B is the correct answer, but I think B is irrelevant, because other crops have nothing to do with cotton

Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also caused erosion and very quickly deforested whole regions.

A. Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also此题考点就是not only...but also倒装:not only放句首 后面部分倒装 然后but also后面正常语序 不倒装的时候是绝对不允许not only...but also...中间夹杂别的成分 不可以说not only...but it also...但是倒装语序就可以说not only+倒装,but it also/but they also等等 此选项错在gave

B. Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast), which gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also这里which指代不清 而且but also后面句子不完整 也就是not only和but also不平行

C. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States, creating farmland (especially in the Northeast) and giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also过去的动作不能改成现在分词形式 but also后面的句子不完整

D. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States created farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also这里是要体会到前人所说not only...but also表示递进 但是but also表示转折 看一下这个句子的意思美国系统清除森林创造了农用地和给予消费者廉价房产与家具,但是这个系统清除森林也引起了水土流失和整个区域的沙漠化。

E. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States not only created farmland (especially in the Northeast), giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it现在分词夹在句中修饰歧义 句子重心改变(gave原来是平行于created) 过去时动词改现在分词错 not only...but (also)按照前人观点是没有错

MY GOD!

考点 主谓一致和平行 tend to do sth.

Longman上查了一下bother ▶MAKE AN EFFORT◀

He didn't bother to answer the question.
not bother about/with
He didn't bother with a reply.
(not) bother doing something
Many young people didn't bother voting.

A scrub jay can remember when it cached a particular piece of food in a particular place, researchers have discovered, and tend not to bother to recover a perishable treat if stored long enough to have rotted.

A. tend not to bother to recover a perishable treat if

Today's SC incorrect questions

TN-24-11

Q17.

Not one of the potential investors is expected to make an effort to buy First Interstate Bank until a merge agreement is signed that includes a provision for penalties if the deal were not to be concluded.

None have arrived yet.
I bought a lot of books in London, but he bought none.
I wanted some more coffee but none was left.

 A.      is expected to make an offer to buy First Interstate Bank until a merge agreement is signed that includes a   provision for penalties if the deal were

B.       is expected to make an offer for buying First Interstate Bank until they sign a merge agreement including a provision for penalties if the deal was

C.      is expected to make an offer to buy First Interstate Bank until a merge agreement be signed by them with a provision for penalties if the deal were

D.      are expected to make an offer for buying First Interstate Bank until it signs a merge agreement with a provision for penalties included if the deal was

E.       are expected to be making an offer to buy First Interstate Bank until they sign a merge agreement including a provision for penalties if the deal were

Q38.

The normative model of strategic decision-making suggests that executives examine a firm’s external environment and internal conditions, and in using the set of objective criteria they derive from these analyses, can decide on a strategy.

Bx

A.      conditions, and in using the set of objective criteria they derive from these analyses, can decide 这里逗号+and应该+SVO 错在后半句不完整

B.       conditions, and they use the set of objective criteria derived from these analyses in deciding这里they指代executives 然后derived from做后置定语 但是use in doing错 应该是use to do就是prep320里常说的to do 表示目的

C.      conditions, and, in using the set of objective criteria derived from these analyses, deciding同样逗号+and后面不是完整SVO

D.      conditions and, using the set of objective criteria derived from these analyses, decide正确 这里是decide和examine并列 using做方式状语 如果大家觉得这样别扭 那么我们可以写成 suggests that executives, using the set of objective criteria derived from these analyses, decide XXX and examineXXX 只是这样写有一点不好 会产生歧义 让大家误认为是usingXXX也和examine有联系似的 所以原句是写的正合适

E.       conditions, and in their use the set of objective criteria they derive from these analyses, decide 这里in their use...

Sentence Structure:

The normative model … suggests that executives examine … and … decide …

Longman ▶THINK SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN◀
to think that something will happen because it seems likely or has been planned
expect to do something
I expect to be back within a week. The company expects to complete work in April.
expect somebody/something to do something
Emergency repairs were expected to take three weeks.I didn't expect him to stay so long.
expect (that)
There's the doorbell - I expect it'll be my mother.
He will be hard to beat. I fully expect (=am completely sure about) that and I'm ready.'Who are you?' he murmured, only half expecting (=thinking it was possible, but not likely) her to answer. He didn't get his expected pay rise.
