这一题警示我们看句子不要局限于画线的句子。有两点原因选C：
1.画线部分的最后一个名词必须是carbon结尾，因为没有画线的句子后面接的是in the form of carbon dioxide,那么这个noun phrase must appropriately modifies the preceding noun.如果是以fungi结尾不符合逻辑，错误的理解为in the form of carbon dioxide修饰fungi.
2.后面有一个and，出现and我么就要联想并列结构，and后面接的是converting,C选项是很好的平行结构：plants...at acquiring carbon,...and (at) converting it (carbon) to...

然后根据OG, A的错误不在于are fungi, 这个表达是对的。A错是因为in the form of carbon dioxide错误地修饰了fungi.
