Frankly speaking, my view is that it is not worth taking MBA in HSG at the moment if one could get offer from top 10 MBA programs internationally that includes IMD.
A desired MBA program should offer 1) a fabulous network; 2) a solid and broad financial education. Based on these two, if i need to consider a MBA program for myself, i would go for the top 10.
HSG has a very good reputation not only in German-speaking region but also several other European countries such as GB and NED. But HSG reputation has been built by its solid bachelor-master system, especially the old 5-year system. The english-speaking Phd education is not that good. In terms of its MBA, it is too early to tell.
The landscape of financial sector has completely changed since Sept. Taking a MBA may not financially benefit more. And therefore, brand will outweigh more.
Disagree. First, if a person would like to work and live in Switzerland, she/he'd be better positioned in job market with a MBA from St Gallen than with MBA from any Top 10 US B school. Why? Swiss people are very local rooted, if you come to Switzerland looking for job with a US MBA, no matter how big the brand, it doesn’t make sense to the Swiss. Of cause, all the big Swiss banking giants have offices in the US, they will recruit MBAs from US Top B schools, but trust me, they even recruit MORE here from Switzerland! And as we already here in Switzerland, of cause we will not go to the US looking for job! So, how could you say US Top 10 schools are better than St. Gallen? Again, as I said before, choose St Gallen is just a personal preference, since it means you select at the same time where to live and work after MBA. And for 100% real, St. Gallen is the best in German Speaking areas, and again for 100% real, German Speaking area is the most affluent area in Switzerland. As for IMD, I just learn something here in St Gallen. In Swiss business circle, there are more cooperations than brutal competitions. You can imagine, Switzerland is so small, if they had not found a cooperation way to survive and to boom, there would not be so many successful Swiss companies. Again, I like to point out that IMD and St Gallen have different marketing segment. IMD is more EU and GB targeted and St Gallen is more German Speaking areas targeted. I stayed 2 years in the States. In my personal point of view, Switzerland has the highest quality of life. And it’s the most beautiful place to go hiking and skiing. |
