E选项。 the nation's highest military award 是the Congressional Medal of Honor的同位语。

be awarded 直接加名词,排除 A   B

the nation’s highest military award 是 the Congressional Medal of Honor 的同位语结构,并非定语从句修饰;long over-due 是形容词,而非副词,因此直接修饰 recognition, 排除 C

in recognition of 是固定搭配,而且 the nation’s highest military award 同位语结构用一对逗号分隔更好,排除 D

名词award指Congressional Medal of Honor,所以long-overdue recognition不可能通过介词for修饰award,排除BD。

Sb. be awarded Honor in recognition of sth.

A的which was the nation’s highest military award, and which was long overdue in两个并列修饰成分,都用which引导太wordy了,不够简洁,而且long overdue 是形容词,应该放在recognition的前面,表示早就应该承认
B的award for long-overdue。
were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in long-overdue recognition of their outstanding bravery.

Taste buds are onion-shaped structures with between 50 and 100 taste cells, each of them has fingerlike projections poking through the opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore.C

(A) them has fingerlike projections poking through the opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore
(B) them that have fingerlike projections that poke through an opening located at the top of the taste bud, which they call the taste pore
(C) which has fingerlike projections poking through the opening, called the taste pore, located at the top of the taste bud
(D) which having fingerlike projections that poke through an opening, which is called the taste pore, located at the top of the taste bud
(E) which have fingerlike projections that are poking through an opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore
C的 called the taste pore, located at the top of the taste bud都在修饰opening

True, those both modify "opening." But notice that this whole clause, starting with "each of which" is a modifier as well. That's what Ron means by "modifier with a modifier."

We don't need a conjunction after ", called the taste pore," because this section is set off in commas, basically just adding extra info. So, while both parts modify the opening, one of them is set off as being at a "lower level" -- basically showing that it is just extra (unnecessary for the meaning of the sentence) info.

奇怪,which

More than fifty years after the Second World War, a number of African American soldiers were awarded ― some of them posthumously ― with the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was the nation’s highest military award, and which was long overdue in recognition of their outstanding bravery.
A.with the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was the nation’s highest military award, and which was long overdue in

B.with the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for long-overdue

C.the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was the nation’s highest military award, long-overdue in

D.the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for long-overduein

E.! the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, in long-overdue

vote for gmat928.
