Thanks for starting another thread, the other INSEAD Q&A message board is way too long, very difficult to navigate and to filter out useful information.

I have few questions:

1) Any tips on how to approach the #3 essay question?  "Describe a situation where you did not meet your personal objective, discuss effect."  With only 250 words, what should I really focus on illustrating?  Should I focus on the process of analyzing the situation and realizing what I can do differently the next time when facing a similar challenge?

2) We all know INSEAD puts especially more emphasis on international experience.  As successful candidates, how did you demonstrate that particular attribute in your essays?  Do you think INSEAD would be happy just to see that you have been living and working/studying in overseas countries?  or should we try to list more specific examples about how exactly we overcame difficulties posted by cultural differences?  What else did you guys put into your essays regarding this topic? 

3) Other than international experience, I think INSEAD is keen in finding out the maturity of the applicants.  What examples or approaches did you use to demonstrate your maturity at both professional and personal level?

4) How did you utilize the optional essay?  For example, I have a low GPA but a high GMAT, do I spend the optional essay on explaning how I regain my focus after my undergrad degree and ensure the adcom that I can do well in the program or use it to explain a gap in my employment history?

1.You could choose either professional or personal example. The importance is what you learn from the process. Try to be concise,you could make it done.

2.In your career essay, you could demonstrate your international experiences; In essay 3 and optional essay, you could also do this.

   Definitely, living,working and studying overseas will add much value to your application. But if your work give you opptortunity to deal with people fromother country, that is also fine. Culture difference, depend on your own experiences.(do not borrow sth from others).

3.Regarding maturity, this attribute is what Every MBA program value the most. You must demonstrate this not only in your essays but also in your interviews.

4.Optional essay, depends on what else you want to mention. I just mention the issue of recommendation letters, in several sentences.

thank you for your response, insead2009.

I didn't intend to 'borrow' anything from anyone.  I was just trying to find out from successful applicants what aspects do INSEAD value the most.  Is it professional or personal experience?  Again, given that the word limits on their essays are so tight, one might have to go with either or, instead of both.  Anyway, I get what you're saying.  The important part is the learning and how you apply it to future endeavors.

Dear INSEAD2009,
What if INSEAD cannot get my TOEFL score from ETS? The process took too looooong a time. I am afraid the score could reach INSEAD only after Oct 10. (R1 Deadline is Oct 1st)
Can I use self-report score?

Contact your admission coordinator to double check!

I also faced the situation that they did not get my GMAT score,but after double check, they actually got my score report.

So take initiative to do it!

At the same time, contact ETS, if possible, I do suggest that you just let ETS send a 2nd score report.You should know what is more important currently.(So just pay for it to ensure the delivery of the file to INSEAD in time.)
