2. “Constant innovation and change within an organization are as likely to damage the organization as they are to improve it.” Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your experience, observations, or reading. When it comes to the question how constant innovation and change within an organization could impact the organization, opinions diversify among different people. To a large extent I am a proponent of the assertion that continual innovation and change within an organization, just like a double edge sword, are as likely to impair the organization as they are to improve it, however, the final judgment may rely on a case-by-case analysis with refined information. In the first place, innovation and change may take place in different areas within an organization, such as technology development, operating system, and organizational structure. It is quite important to understand the nature of such innovations and their correlations with the ultimate goal of the organization. For instance, in information technology companies such as Google, technical innovation and changes are considered the company’s DNA and are encouraged throughout the development of these companies. To encourage innovation, Google gives its employees one day a week, which is 20 percent of work time, to work on virtually anything that interests them. It is no doubt that the soaring stock price of Google and its leading position are powered by the constant innovations. Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the correlation between the innovation and the nature of the organization, in order to decide whether constant innovation and changes are beneficial or detrimental to the organization. In the second place, how to determine whether a change would cause damage to the organization or help improve it also depends on one’s scope. It is not uncommon that a change may offer a short-term advantage to an organization at the cost of inhibiting the company’s long-term growth, and vice versa. For example, frequent organizational changes such as laying off employees from research and development department may have an immediate positive impact on the company’s quarterly earnings report due to the cost reduction. However, it may ultimately cause the company to lose its competence to its competitors due to the lack of research and development forces. Under such circumstances, constant changes are likely to damage the organization as they are to improve it, depending on how the improvement and damage are defined. To sum up, it is indeed a complex and controversial problem to determine whether constant innovation and change within an organization are as likely to damage the organization as they are to improve it. While in most cases the answer is a qualified yes, a case-by-case analysis might be necessary when evaluating different situations.
