我觉得of和with不是考点。
D,E错是因为of up to 600 rooms each在句子中的作用改变了，属于不忠实原文。
C因为had been 时态错了。

提点我个人的不同理解，我还是觉得后半部分是 with引导的一个独立主格，中间有个插入语“of up to 600 rooms each”，后边是V-ed的形式。总体来看就是with stuctures connected by……，如果把each看成独立主格的话整体结构很混乱的说

with 引导的独立主格是需要自带逻辑主语的。其形式为
with+n+doing/done
with+n+adj短语
with+n+prep短语
with+n+n
但是此处的with结构并没有一个n词可以作为它的逻主。所以，我觉得这里的with结构并非独立主格，而是一个普通的prep结构。with结构此处修饰的是动词built其逻主为settlements.

of up to 600 rooms each，是一个倒装了的独立主格结构。

我觉得四楼说的好。我觉得我们的眼光被出题者的划线所干扰了，而他们的目的就是要这个效果。

如果没有划线，我们会顺利看到句子主干settlements were built with XX structures
但是出题者特意在 built 后面加了on a spectacular scale ，然后后面顺手加划线，给出迷惑答案 of 和正确答案 with，就是为了考验你是否能把scale和句子主干分开（不幸的是我也中招了）

所以，当我看到四楼解答后，可以立刻排除C、D、E答案

这个题选择C  我想问一下and 后面resembling 与谁并列呢？
我感觉这个题选择E  因为定语从句有很好的修饰作用 并且显示出了“被发现” 的被动语态  可是又考虑到THAT 不能裸奔 并且THAT+IS 被视为不简洁  所以 即使看了CDerS 的解释后还是很纠结  请帮忙解答谢谢~~
