It conforms to all the rules of standard written English; for example: - noun-verb agreement
- noun-pronoun agreement
- pronoun consistency
- pronoun case
- verb tense sequence
Further, a correct sentence will not have— - dangling, misplaced, or improperly formed modifiers,
- unidiomatic or inconsistent expressions, or
- faults in parallel construction.
Effective Expression An effective sentence expresses an idea or relationship clearly and concisely as well as grammatically. An effective sentence does not necessarily have the fewest and simplest words. Rather, an effective sentence has no superfluous words or needlessly complicated expressions. In addition, an effective sentence uses proper diction. (Diction refers to the standard dictionary meanings of words and the appropriateness of words in context.) In evaluating the diction of a sentence, you must be able to recognize whether the words are— - well chosen,
- accurate, and
- suitable for the context.
DirectionsEach of the Sentence Correction questions presents a sentence, part or all of which is underlined. Beneath the sentence you will find five ways of phrasing the underlined part. The first of these repeats the original; the other four are different. If the original is best, choose the first answer; otherwise choose one of the others. In choosing your answer, follow the requirements of standard written English, paying attention to grammar, word choice, and sentence construction. Choose the answer that produces the most effective sentence; this answer should make the sentence clear, exact, and free of grammatical error, and should minimize awkwardness, ambiguity, and redundancy.
StrategiesThere are several basic steps you can take to be certain that you answer the questions that are being asked. Read the entire sentence carefully Try to understand the specific idea or relationship that the sentence is most likely intended to express. Evaluate the underlined part of the sentence Because the part of the sentence that may be incorrect is underlined, concentrate on evaluating that part for errors and possible corrections before reading the answer choices. Read each answer choice carefully The first answer choice always repeats the underlined portion of the original sentence. Choose it if you think the sentence is best as it stands, but only after examining all of the other choices. Determine how well each choice corrects the original sentence See how well each choice corrects what you consider to be wrong with the original sentence. Consider all aspects of sentence correctness and effectiveness Evaluate the sentence and the choices in terms of general clarity, grammatical and idiomatic usage, language economy and precision, and appropriateness of diction. Substitute your answer choice back into the sentence Read the whole sentence, substituting the choice that you prefer for the underlined part. A choice may be wrong if it does not fit grammatically or structurally with the rest of the sentence. Remember that some sentences will require no corrections. For such sentences you should select the first answer choice.
Study SuggestionsOne way to gain familiarity with the basic conventions of standard written English is to read material that reflects standard usage. Suitable material will usually be found in good magazines and nonfiction books, editorials in outstanding newspapers, and the collections of essays used by many college and university writing courses. Reviewing basic rules of grammar and practicing writing exercises are also ways to study for the Sentence Correction questions. If you have papers that have been carefully evaluated for grammatical errors, it may be helpful to review the comments and corrections.
Sample Question and AnswerSample Question Added to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits. Sample Answer and Explanation The first answer choice presents a dangling modifier. The phrase beginning the sentence can fit nowhere in the sentence and make logical sense. Coming first, it modifies employees, the nearest free noun in the main clause; i.e., the first answer choice says that the employees were added to the increase in hourly wages. The second answer choice also begins with a dangling modifier; moreover, the simple past tense requested is needed to place an action before the present action are...seeking. In the third answer choice, were does not agree in number with the subject of the clause, increase, and it is not clear whether added to the increase is supposed to modify program or benefits. The fourth answer choice also lacks agreement (increase...were). The last answer choice is best.
