In a sense, it is true. I talked to a friend of mine in Beijing. He got a PHD in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University and is working for Intel Beijing as a first level R&D manager. He made about USD 90,000 per year. However, my friend can accumulate enough funding to invest in real estate and he currently owns 14 apartments in Beijing. For a person with the same qualification, he would probably make 2X (USD 180,000 per year) in Silicon Valley. This kind of salary level allows the person to buy a USD 1 million house (with mortgage, of course). But it won't allow him to have extra money to invest. But again, the game play in Silicon Valley is really different. Salary does not matter too much. Any "decent" engineer makes between USD 100,000 to 200,000 per year. What matter the most is still stock related compensation. |
