Tempted to choose Ross but don't want to rush to a decision yet.

Any former or current Duke students to share their exp and insights about the school's consulting placement for the past two years?

Standford,
Berkely, Duke
Georgetown, GWU, JHU, CMU,

Here are my two cents:

Overall academic reputation:  Duke > Ross

MBA education: Ross >= Duke (Ross has strong marketing program, and Duke has the one of the best health programs in the nation)

I visited Duke during the women weekend last year.  After talking to current students (both Chinese and American), my understanding is that compare to Ross, Duke is more focus on academic education.  In Duke, students need 70+ credit hours to graduate; on the other hand, in Ross, only 50+ credit hours required (which leave students more time for job hunting), and due to its location constrain, Ross’s career service is more active on helping their students look for jobs.

The bottom line is that both schools are great and on the same level, and the finally decision really goes to the personal preferences and culture fit.  I applied Duke in R2 due to its better location and much nicer weather, which play a critical role during my school selection process!!!

Finally, Congratulations on your admissions!!!  Best Wishes!!!

Cheers,

Lan

I used to believe that too. But come to think of it, does it mean a "Oxford MBA" is better than "NYU Stern MBA"?
Oxford definitely has a bigger name than NYU, but I wouldn't think it's better.

I totally agree that job placement is the most important to an MBA graduate. Don't take me wrong, Ross is a great school (otherwise I wouldn't apply it) and so is Duke. I would say that the academic and job hunting differences between these two schools are not THAT big. If I were to choose, just from my own preferences, I would weight the long-term value of university prestige more, compared with the small differences in academic ranking.

In terms of NYU Stern and Oxford, I don't think that's a good apple to apple comparison. First, people in Eurpoe tend to value U.S. education more (at least my European colleagues told me so), thus NYU graduates can compete with Oxford in London. Second, NYU is strong in finance and so close to Wall Street, perfect for people who want to do IB in the U.S.  Well...for some one who wants to get a general management position in a Commonwealth country other than Europe and US, maybe Oxford actually can open more doors for him...

It's all depends on personal preferences, and intended career path. Personally, I rank my choices by career placement, school prestige, location/weather, and then academic . Just ask yourself what do you value the most. Then this question becomes easy to answer.

I am more thinking about working in Hong Kong, where the brand of Oxford is 10x bigger than NYU.  I do know NYU has a better MBA program, but I am not sure which school will benefit my career more.

I almost applied for Yale tempted by its general reputation. After having talking with several persons in the business field, I found it is a wrong perception that the people you'll work with don't know the ranking of in a specific area. After graduated from B-school, you'll deal with people in the business world and most people in this loop know the ranking game very well.

As to the general reputaion, maybe I'm biased, but, from what I know, Duke is a top university in undergraduate, while UM is stronger in graduate education. If you check, you'll find UM is better than Duke in most areas. I think they are comparable in the general reputation side.

Having said all of these, I'll say both Fuqua and Ross will provide you great opportunies. However, if you are concerned with specific concentration, it does make some difference. Fuqua is strong in Health care, Ross is strong in general management which will be an edge to consulting career.

I prefer Ross based on the following reasons:

1. I would like to concentrate on general management, maybe consulting. Ross has the top3 program in general management.

2. I do think Ross' MAP is a very great invention. It will help you a lot by doing a project in real business world.

3. Academic aspect is an important factor in MBA education, but personally I think building network is more important. From what I learn, Ross has one of closest communities among the top MBA programs. I do believe it is a key factor to spend such a big amount of money on an MBA education.

Any way, it's ultimately a personal decision. You should be able to pick the right one based on your career goal, personal perenference, etc.

Good luck.
