选校求助： Purdue（GA）vs. Rice (Jones)

I will vote for Rice. 

#1) Houston is one of largest cities in US and a lot of Chinese.  Best life and opportunity for you and your family.  

#2) Rice is best school in Houston (except Baylor Medical School).  If you want to switch career, you may find a part-time, intern-like job (if you have working permit) because most b-schools have no class on Friday + best local school + high GMAT.  You end up with extra working experience in your resume or translate it into a full-time job after MBA. 

#3) On average, Rice students got higher pay than Purdue students.

I would vote for Rice as well! The name Rice has a great reputation across the United States, in comparison with Purdue. Although Purdue's MBA ranking is higher than Rice (33 vs. 40, according to the 2009 US News ranking), the general perception of people's opinion on the name Purdue is not that good. 

On a second note, Rice has a relatively young MBA program (started in 1974), so I think its long term prospect is better (on the rise).

谢谢各位给我的建议。 不过在visit之后，思前想后，还是选择Purdue。

对Purdue的visit给我留下了比较好的印象。facility很好， program director， admission director， and career services 的director都抽出时间和我谈话， 回答我的各种问题 （比如说，Admission Director告诉我今年有270封的申请来自中国学生）。不过最主要的因素是感觉Purdue更能帮助我的future career

1。总体上， Purdue和Rice都是rigional b－school， 但是相对而言purdue有35％的毕业生分布在除Midwest的全美各地。而Rice只有20％会离开Texas 发展。Purdue的学生去East coast和West cost的学生比例都要比Rice高。  Rice的本科是非常有名，比purdue更像是一所elite university。In houston, People think rice is a NERD school. 如果我去rice，最后很可能留在Houston。对于将来有回国打算的我， 这并不是一个好选择。而且由于Purdue在engineering的强势，purdue在中国比rice的认知度更高。（就像是在中国有几个人知道Swarthmore or Williams college 呢？ 尽管这两个学校是如此之好）
所以
    Purdue可能会对我将来在国内有更大的帮助。

2。 Rice的finance很强，再加上在Houston的各大公司，bank的分部提供的就业机会，有50％的人毕业后会去做finance。 我去rice应该也只有Finance可选了。 但是单纯的finance并不是我最终想做的。 在purdue，就业function相对比较分散。除了Finance, Operation （purdue的operation 排No 3）对我的career goal也是一个有力的补充。加上Purdue在manufacturing industry里的名气很大，这些对我将来进入Pharma/biotech  industry都是些有利的因素。

3。Purdue因为选择性的interview很少学生，而且这个学校比较低调，所以一直不是很了解这个program以及其就业情况。对此颇多疑虑。去visit了Krannert后，发现其就业还是不错的。有很多大公司来campus招聘。但是，很大比例的Krannert的学生去Manufacturing or techonlogy industry， 结果就是Krannert的起薪比起那些有很多学生去IB或consulting的学校要低。 Rice也许就是一个例子。据说这一两年有10％的rice 学生去IB。难怪rice的起薪和top 25的学校在一个level上。 所以尽管Krannert的起薪相对普通，但其job plancement 还算不错。

4。可能除了top10 的学校外，最终能不能找到工作， 完全取决于个人的背景和努力程度。这个是学校不能帮自己做的。Houston的机会多，我知道就有Rice MBA 1st year的中国学生（非phd，非math背景），没有什么工作经验，只有做学术研究的quarantivive background，却也可以在今年这样tough的形势下拿到Merry Linch的Intern。  Purdue去IB的人不是很多。但是也有08 class的中国学生拿到IB的十几万起薪的Offer （当然这个人的背景很特殊）。 但是这两个例子给我的感觉就是能找到什么样的工作是case by case的。

Houson可能工作机会更多，但不一定我在houston会有更大的机会拿到我想去的地方的position。  

5。 usnew09的排名刚刚出来。和08的排名相比，purdue下降了近10名。 rice上升了7－8名。似乎purdue对rice的优势非常小了。 不过就我看来，因为今年usnews用了新的methodology， 谁知道能不能反映这些学校的水平呢？ 在2004的排名中，Rice还是27，到2005的排名，一下子就到了45。 短短1年，有什么样的变化会让一个学校的排名发生这样大的波动呢？

不知道将来会如何，但希望自己的选择会是最有利自己的career。

去年rockets来我们城市比赛的时候，我组织了200人去看姚的比赛。 嗯，已经很给他面子了    : P

Purdue和Rice各有各的特点。不过Notre Dame和Rice， 我感觉比较类似。都是那种除了IVY外的最好的那个档次的本科学校。一个有chicago，一个有houston。

如果考虑到Rice现在给中国学生scholarship的方面，我也支持Rice

Good luck with your choice! Purdue has a fine MBA program as well.

First,it's good for you to have a campus visit.Obviously,Krannert staffs leave you a very positive impression,but you'd better keep on collecting information from current MBA so that you may have the whole picture.Some MBA told me the career service is not satisfactory,especially for international students.And the recent placement is also disappointing.The main reason Purdue dropped down from the MBA ranking is the employment rate. Purdue once ranked top 1 as the most popular MBA among employers,but this year it was 12th.Employers complain that Purdue take more students with insufficient w/e

Second, Krannert lauched a new program this year,MSF,which means your MBA class size will be bigger because MSF share classes with MBA. I doubt Krannert has some financial probelms,the true reason that they started the MSF.Besides, it's a weakness that they seldom require interviews since they are not as serious as other schools in regards of admission. (No offense to those admitted to Purdue)

However, I do agree that your background fits Purdue well.Since you intend to come back to China, the chinese network you build up in purdue will help(many chinese there,MBA 30+mainland,40+taiwanese)and since your focus is operation,what purdue is famous for,you might make the right decision.
