1 海豚哺乳问题 GWD-27-Q35 In polluted environments, dolphins gradually accumulated toxins in their body fat, and the larger the dolphin the more accumulated toxin it can tolerate. Nearly 80 percent of the toxins a female dolphin has accumulated pass into the fat-rich milk her nursing calf ingests. Therefore, the unusually high mortality rate among dolphin calves in the industrially contaminated waters along Florida’s Gulf Coast is probably the result of their being poisoned by their mother’s milk. Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. The survival rate of firstborn dolphin calves in the area along Florida’s Gulf Coast is highest for those whose mothers were killed before they were weaned. B. The rate at which adult dolphins living in the waters along Florida’s Gulf Coast accumulate toxins is no higher than that of adult dolphins in comparably polluted waters elsewhere. C. Among dolphin calves born in the area along Florida’s Gulf Coast, the mortality rate is highest among those with living siblings. D. As dolphins age, they accumulate toxins from the environment more slowly than when they were young. E. Dolphins, like other marine mammals, have a higher proportion of body fat than do most land mammals. A 吃奶的死了,还没吃奶妈妈死了的小宝宝活了,说明奶水被poisoned了。异因异果

Noting this phenomenon, SaleCo’s president plans to increase overall productivity by keeping the offices closed on Fridays and having all employees work the same schedule—ten hours a day, four days a week. Which of the following, if true, provides the most reason to doubt that the president’s plan, if implemented, will achieve its stated purpose? - Typically, a SaleCo employee’s least productive hours in the workplace are the early afternoon hours.
- None of the employees who work four days a week had volunteered to work that schedule, but all were assigned to it by their supervisors.
- Working ten hours a day has allowed the most productive employees to work two hours alone each day in their respective offices relatively undisturbed by fellow employees.
- Employees at SaleCo are compensated not on the basis of how many hours a week they work but on the basis of how productive they are during the hours they are at work.
- Those SaleCo employees who have a four-day workweek do not take any of their office work to do at home on Fridays.

GWD-9-Q30: Boldface
Criminologist: Some legislators advocate mandating a sentence of life in prison for anyone who, having twice served sentences for serious crimes, is subsequently convicted of a third serious crime. These legislators argue that such a policy would reduce crime dramatically, since it would take people with a proven tendency to commit crimes off the streets permanently. What this reasoning overlooks, however, is that people old enough to have served two prison sentences for serious crimes rarely commit more than one subsequent crime. Filling our prisons with such individuals would have exactly the opposite of the desired effect, since it would limit our ability to incarcerate younger criminals, who commit a far greater proportion of serious crimes. In the argument as a whole, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles?
A. The first is a conclusion that the argument as a whole seeks to refute; the second is a claim that has been advanced in support of that conclusion. B. The first is a conclusion that the argument as a whole seeks to refute; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. C. The first is the main conclusion of the argument; the second is an objection that has been raised against that conclusion. D. The first is the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a prediction made on the basis of that conclusion. E. The first is a generalization about the likely effect of a policy under consideration in the argument; the second points out a group of exceptional cases to which that generalization does not apply.
4 GWD-29-Q8
Which of the following, if true, provides evidence that most logically completes the argument below?
According to a widely held economic hypothesis, imposing strict environmental regulations reduces economic growth. This hypothesis is undermined by the fact that the states with the strictest environmental regulations also have the highest economic growth. This fact does not show that environmental regulations promote growth, however, since ______.
- those states with the strictest environmental regulations invest the most in education and job training
- even those states that have only moderately strict environmental regulations have higher growth than those with the least-strict regulations
- many states that are experiencing reduced economic growth are considering weakening their environmental regulations
- after introducing stricter environmental regulations, many states experienced increased economic growth
- even those states with very weak environmental regulations have experienced at least some growth

GWD-5-Q30: Which of the following most logically completes the argument?
The irradiation of food kills bacteria and thus retards spoilage. However, it also lowers the nutritional value of many foods. For example, irradiation destroys a significant percentage of whatever vitamin B1 a food may contain. Proponents of irradiation point out that irradiation is no worse in this respect than cooking. However, this fact is either beside the point, since much irradiated food is eaten raw, or else misleading, since _______.
- many of the proponents of irradiation are food distributors who gain from food’s having a longer shelf life
- it is clear that killing bacteria that may be present on food is not the only effect that irradiation has
- cooking is usually the final step in preparing food for consumption, whereas irradiation serves to ensure a longer shelf life for perishable foods
- certain kinds of cooking are, in fact, even more destructive of vitamin B1 than carefully controlled irradiation is
- for food that is both irradiated and cooked, the reduction of vitamin B1 associated with either process individually is compounded
E,有争议选C
个人意见选E
Longman中对mislead的定义 To make someone believe something that is not true by giving them information that is false or not complete
因为问misleading,可以确定俩个问题: 第一, something that is not true 第二, information is either false or not complete
前提一 Irradiation àkills bacteria à1) retards spoilage; 2) lowers nutritional value (destroys VB1) 前提二 Proponents à irradiation is no worse than cooking in terms of destroying nutritional value 结论: Proponents à irradiation is no worse than cooking is 1) beside the point, since irradiated food is eaten raw; (跑题,因为irradiated food都是生吃的,不经过cooking,所以irradiation和cooking没法比较) 2) misleading, since reduction cannot be separated into two processes (因为无法分辨哪个步骤损失的VB1多,所以说irradiation is no worse than cooking是false的)
选项C:cooking是最后一步,而irradiation是延长perishable foods的保质期。我认为此项无关,题目问的是misleading的原因,选项C说的是两种手段的目的
