AWA Argument : The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper. “Commuter use of the new subway train is exceeding the transit company’s projections. However, commuter use of the shuttle buses that transport people to the subway stations is below the projected volume. If the transit company expects commuters to ride the shuttle buses to the subway rather than drive there, it must either reduce the shuttle bus fares or increase the price of parking at the subway stations.” Issue “Since science and technology are becoming more and more essential to modern society, schools should devote more time to teaching science and technology and less to teaching the arts and humanities.”
CR 我在考前只看了一些JJ中的GWD原题,结果碰到了两三道 ●Press Secretary: Our critics claim that the President’s recent highway project cancellations demonstrate a vindictive desire to punish legislative districts controlled by opposition parties. They offer as evidence the fact that 90 percent of the projects canceled were in such districts. But all of the canceled projects had been identified as wasteful in a report written by respected nonpartisan auditors. So the President’s choice was clearly motivated by sound budgetary policy, not partisan politics. Which of the following is an assumption on which the press secretary’s argument depends? A. Canceling highway projects was not the only way for the President to punish legislative districts controlled by opposition parties. B. The scheduled highway projects identified as wasteful in the report were not mostly projects in districts controlled by the President’s party. C. The number of projects canceled was a significant proportion of all the highway projects that were to be undertaken by the government in the near future. D. The highway projects canceled in districts controlled by the President’s party were not generally more expensive than the projects canceled in districts controlled by opposition parties. E. Reports by nonpartisan auditors are not generally regarded by the opposition parties as a source of objective assessments of government projects. 这题JJ答案给的是B,我当时就感觉应该选D,考试时也选的D 因为原文中已经说 all of the canceled projects had been identified as wasteful in a report,所以B中的mostly我觉得没有什么意义了,因为并不是只有一部分cancel的工程被identified了,而是所有的。
●Which of the following most logically completes the argument? A certain cultivated herb is one of a group of closely related plants that thrive in soil with high concentrations of metals that are toxic to most other plants. Agronomists studying the herb have discovered that it produces large amounts of histidine, an amino acid that, in test-tube solutions, renders these metals chemically inert. Possibly, therefore, the herb’s high histidine production is what allows it to grow in metal-rich soils, a hypothesis that would gain support if ______. A. histidine is found in all parts of the plant—roots, stem, leaves, and flowers B. the herb’s high level of histidine production is found to be associated with an unusually low level of production of other amino acids C. others of the closely related group of plants are also found to produce histidine in large quantities D. cultivation of the herb in soil with high concentrations of the metals will, over an extended period, make the soil suitable for plants to which the metals are toxic E. the concentration of histidine in the growing herb declines as the plant approaches maturity A certain cultivated herb is one of a group of closely related plants that thrive in soil ......说明这一herb只是某group of closely related plants 中的一种plant,而因为后面的从句......that thrive in soil with high concentrations of metals that are toxic to most other plants. 的that显然是就近指代的a group of closely related plants(同时也可由从句谓语thrive为复数形式判断指代对象)。因此,从句描述的性质thrive in soil with high concentrations of metals that are toxic to most other plants应该是这一group of closely related plants都具有的,herb只是举群体中一个个体的例子来证明这一群体的性质。
●Migrating shorebirds stop at our beach just to feed on horseshoe-crab eggs, a phenomenon that attracts tourists. Shorebirds only eat eggs that a crab happens to uncover when it is digging its own nest. To bring more tourists, the town council plans to undertake a beach reclamation project to double the area available to crabs for nesting. 这道题短文是GWD的改了一下,问由文段里的信息可以推断出什么 我选的是 将来shorebirds will have less crab eggs to eat. 因为double the area available to crabs for nesting之后,crab的生存密度减少了,这样在crab dig its own nest的时候,uncover其他crab的eggs的几率就小了,于是可供shorebirds吃的eggs就少了。
●还有一道题,是说“因为big vehicles have a less chance to cause serious injuries for the car drivers in car accidents, therefore increasing the number of big vehicles and decreasing the small ones will reduce the injuries happen in car accidents" 问哪个可以weaken这个结论 我选的是"big vehicles 在车祸中会对行人造成更大的伤害。
