Most test takers always find that the speaking section is the most difficult part of ibt, and so do I. However, there are ways to take it down. The speaking on ibt is not exactly a test of english speaking ability, it is more like a test of your familiarity of formatted speaking. With that said, here I can not overemphasize the importance of fixing your way of speaking in English and in my opinion, templates will significantly help those who want to get satisfactory scores on speaking (as well as writing). Prepare some of your own, record them and play them back until you are satisfied, then what you need to do is to stick to your style, and never even think about changing your style of speaking because that is from which the hesitation and stutter are from when you are actually sitting the exam, one thing I am sure is that flexibilty will do you more harm than good.
Very often people wonder why high school students can get higher scores than the college graduates and even those who have been working for many years and who never give up on english. To me, it is not surprising and not surprising at all. First I have to acknowledge that these high school students do study very hard, but think about what high school students normally experience everyday, and when they talk to their classmates and friends, what do they usually talk about? What is more, if you can recall what we were required to write when we were at middle/high school, for example, describe a happy day: I guess for some of us we wrote about a field trip and others might write about a zoo experience with their parents or friends, so I believe you will not be surprised that we too used to be very familar with the general topics/subjects which are being tested on ibt now. Ibt is designed for high school students who live in the setting being tested, therefore it is much easier for them to score on the test , this is their built-in advantage. For you and me, sadly we have passed that life for too long, taking the test is like reliving our youth years, but we have only 15 seconds.
For the speaking, the most important scoring points are coherency and logic, some people pay too much attention to advanced vocabulary, it is utterly unnecessary, try to use simple and logical reasons to convince the graders that your arguments stand ground; for example, why do you want to live with a roomate? Answer : Because it is more fun, because I will not feel alone; because when in the morning I forget to get up on time for my class, somebody can remind me; because by doing this we can share the rent which will be more affordable and because if somebody try to trespass and break in, we can help defend and protect each other. Reasons can be many, but use your guts and instinct.
Focus on things that are campus-related, most of the questions on No1 and 2 will be of students' interest. For instance, what kind of girlfriend do you want to have? What will be your answer? Do you prefer your girlfriend beautiful, then say it; do you prefer your girlfriend to be good at cooking? Yes? Then say it; do you prefer girlfriend to be gentle and follow you all the time? then say it. Do not escalate everything to a moral code, you do not have to be politically right, nobody except the grader will hear you, so do not be afraid even if you want to marry a rich gal and live on her never work again.
Do not speak too fast or too slow, use your normal speed just like when you are talking in chinese., pause between sentences. Familarize yourself with a set of topics, I think that is what the official ETS guide advocates, it will help elevate your confidence. And finally, Good Luck to everybody.
