Taken:

Why would your think your classmates be your boss? They also started from entry level as you did. And sometimes promotion in corporate is far slower than that in IB.

A CF position right after MBA would focus mainly on implementation level. So I guess it might be a accelerated track to do some external advisory in I-Banking before heading for an industrial finance role.

Besides, I truly agree that health and happiness comes first. But only people who have gone through the process can tell whether the labor worth it, and that's why there exist all kinds of 围城.

以下是引用Taken在2007-12-1 2:29:00的发言:

I agree with you, in part.

Since there are so many career-changers, many of them are not practitioners of IB, i presume your definition of finance is IB, and dont have friends working in that area. It is true that many of them have no idea of how much IBers actually earn. At the same time , it is also true that they are not familiar with working pattern of IBers.

Yes, total package of IBers is the greatest one I have ever seen in the business world. But I really dont think money is always the first priority when you choose career. Salary, welfare, pressure, health, location, interests, personal preference, all these should be taken into account when people select jobs.

If money make you happy, or being richer than your friends/classmates/colleagues make you feel good, working in IB will be a nightmare. People make friends in the job. As an entry level employee, you are not richer than anyone with whom you work. Almost every colleague's salary is greater than yours. Do you think you will be comfortable under this circumstance? Come on, human being are social animals. You always compare something with someone else since you come to this planet.

Maybe I'm old. In my opinion, nothing is more important than health of myself and my family, and I dont think working in IB is good for my health. Maybe you will say: It's not a long-term job, I only plan to work there for 3-5 years, after that, I will change. How? Go to corporation? 3-5 years time cost, opportunity cost, physical health, all these just for money? at the time you wanna go to corporation, maybe the recruiter is one of your classmates, maybe even your boss is your classmate. you think this is a good deal or excellent career development? Be my guest.

Nod! If the salary divided by working hours, hourly pay in IB may be not as good as what most people had expected...

And, the career path of a IB banker is not clear as I know. If you are lucky, you could get promotion after three years associate work and the life style can be a little bit better, but I don't think most of them have that luck.

As we've known, all the moviestars are complaining that their lives have no privacy, full of pain, and they'd rather to be an ordinary person......

Taken, I have some friends in IB. Some of them become MD or Director and some of them are just entry-level analysts. I understand it's a tough industry and people are mean there.Plus you will be under big pressure. My friends are complaining their job sometimes, but none of them leaves the industry so far.

As a former finance guy, you have tons of opportunities to regret and go to field in your life. However, as a career changer from field, there's only one chance for him/her to get into IB during his/her life----the time when he/she graduates from the MBA program.Maybe they can survive maybe not, but even in case they regret later, they earned the money they wanted and still have chance to transfer to corporations.Plus usually they won't be in a low level in the corporation, with the experience from big IB.

You mentioned that"In my opinion, nothing is more important than health of myself and my family, and I dont think working in IB is good for my health." and " at the time you wanna go to corporation, maybe the recruiter is one of your classmates, maybe even your boss is your classmate." ----If you feel you and your family's health is the most important, then why you still care that your classmate's career development is better than yours?

As you said,"As an entry level employee, you are not richer than anyone with whom you work. Almost every colleague's salary is greater than yours. Do you think you will be comfortable under this circumstance?"----I have no idea why an entry level people should have expected that he would be richer than others.Anyway he has the hope to be promoted. After several years he will become richer than some of the others------at least the new entry level employees.

Hi fellows (I like this word, it always make me feel lie a gangster, Don Corleone, muhaha)

it seems that people always care about something related to money.

Friskies,

Im a newbie in this field and still struglling for my GMAT. Essay is still far far away from me. In fact, I have little idea of how to spell it. All I have is almost 30 years living experience, 8 years working experience, and finance education background and IT working background. If you think it is ok, then ok. Im glad to work with you and make progress together.

Villanelle,

I believe 3-5 years is enough to get promoted. If not, no chance to get promoted.Personal experience.

As a member of CSBF, you definitely know MBA much more than I do. But, please forgive my curiosity, does every MBA consider financial job the first priority? Go to IB first, and set career goal as CFO of MNC? If true, honestly, Im very happy to hear that.

For me, general management is much more attactive than finance. Maybe it results from we have different backgrounds. The existence of 围城 dervies from people who are outside dont know the ecosystem of it, and people who are inside might want to get rid of it.

Stonic2004,

As uneployment has two indicator, ratio and frequency, salary has two measuring standard, total package and effective working hour payment.

That's because most of them didn't truly realize how much the finance people earn. Please refer to the insiders' survey on Vault.com then talk about this. Any other industry can offer 170k for first year associate and 250k for the second year (Say total compensation----base+bonus)?

如果你的生命中只有钱,那么只能说明你这么多年所受的教育是失败的。越是贪婪的,得到的越少
