B用the 解太過牽強...B最不好的地方是appeared跟have vanished時態問題造成句意有出入..(原題是have appeared..這題對外國人來說一樣是很TRICKY的.... 看看他們怎麼說...不過我覺得如同老師所說B頭重腳輕違反美國人說話用字的原則...B. '99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures' is not idiomatic 這句應該是B不行最主要的原因..而E是合乎說話習慣的講法
Support For B: —————- 1) B correctly uses past tense to place species on the planet and then present perfect to indicate that the species gradually vanished after appearing. E is incorrect . Since the species had to appear before vanishing, the use of present perfect in both phrases is incorrect. 2) B is also the shortest one GMAT rewards briefness 3) In E, the clause “99 percent have vanished” doesn’t seem to be proper. is it not preferable to have 99 percent of something in one clause? Support For E: —————– 1) Even though E may not be concise, it correctly uses the idiom “Of the…” 2) The 500M species have appeared over time.* Shouldn’t we use “have” (present perfect) to indicate that it was a continuous process. * if they have just appeared at once or in a specific period then that spec. time/period should have been mentioned. 3) B leaves open the possibility that more than 500 million diff species may have appeared on earth. E make is specific - only 500 mill diff species have appeared and 99% of these have vanished. 4) E is correct because it states something (appearing of species) that is continuing even today. B talks about something in past that is not happening now. 6) B is equivalent to: Nearly 99 percent of [five hundred million different species of] living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished. That’s because B does not have “the” before “of five..” Now, “that appeared” should refer to a past period. Only then it can be correct. So, B should have been like: Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth in the so-and-so era have vanished. |
