Question: Some people claim that zoos have no purpose. Please write an essay stating your opinion with examples.
Recently, the number of people who visit zoos have been on a steady decline. Some people argue that this is so because a zoo has no useful purpose. However, I disagree with this statement as I believe zoos still serve three utterly important functions: to provide a place for entertainment, to provide a place for scientific education, and to provide a place for wild life reservation. First, people like to visit the zoos during their weekends to look at different animals. Going to the zoo with one’s parents is a childhood memory that most people share. It is a place where the entire family can have fun for an entire day. Most people will recall of stories of people engaging in silly behavior in the zoos, such as misidentifying a monkey for a gorilla. These are jokes that may be passed down for many generations. Also, people get the chance to be outdoors, and to learn about different types of animals. The latter point can make the visit an educational experience that most children will not forget. Hence, one can see that a zoo clearly can serve as a place to provide entertainment that is fun and educational for the entire family. Second, the zoo is a place for students to learn about animals. Although most science textbooks now a days feature pictures of various species, it is still no comparable to looking at the animals face to face. Students have a chance to better observe the behavior of various animals, and to listen to the noises that they make; these are not experiences or information that can be conveyed by textbooks. Furthermore, students can develop a sense of interaction when they are at the zoo; some animals will come close to the cage, allowing some students to have a closer look at the animals. In certain instances, such at the Toronto Wild Life Zoo, people are given the chance to pet monkeys. This is an educational experience that simply cannot occur without the existence of zoos. Therefore, it is evident that one of the purposes of having a zoo to for students to learn more about various types of animals. Third, a zoo can serve as a place to preserve endangered species. Currently, there are numerous animals on the endangered species list due to poaching or other human-induced environmental damages. For example, due to poaching, Pandas are currently considered an endangered species. The solution currently employed is to keep some Pandas in zoos to protect them from unethical hunters. Although it may appear to be cruel to keep such large animals in such small and confined spaces, they are nonetheless in a safe environment. Thus, one of the primarily functions of having a zoo is to preserve wildlife. It is obvious that zoos can be a source of entertainment, education and wild life preservation. People who claim that zoos have no purpose clearly have not thoroughly analyzed the various functions that zoos serve in our society. Perhaps this is because most people do not recognize the significance of having a zoo, and the benefits that it provides. This may be a signal that zoos ought to engage in more marketing to educate the public about its functions. |
