“Businesses and other organizations have overemphasized the importance of working as a team. Clearly, in any human group, it is the strong individual, the person wit the most commitment and energy, who gets things done.” The author argues that the importance of teamwork has been overemphasized by organizations and it is the strong individual who makes the difference. I partially agree with the author’s statement that Businesses have stressed too much on the importance of working as a team. However, his assertion that work is done by the strong individual in the team is too extreme for me. From business advisors who collaborate to analyze new investment project to the board of directors who meet to make final decisions, work teams play a significant role worldwide everyday. No wonder Businesses put so much emphasize on Teamwork. Why? As Katzenbach and Smith so succinctly state, "teams outperform individuals acting alone or in larger organizational groupings." By definition, teams bring together larger pool of skills and minds from a variety of people. We know from our everyday experiences, however, that individual often performs better alone than when he or she is within a group. The reason is that effective teamwork is not achieved as easily as getting a collection of individuals together. Without stated fundamentals, the group would barely react to changes and thus lose flexibility. Group members would be aimless and frustrated. How can a group work under such conditions? By establishing clear goals and defining approaches for the whole group, teams would perform better in problem solving, communicate more efficiently and become more result driven. As the author mentioned, individuals do play a major role in getting things done. However, often in a group. A Chinese classical masterpiece < Pilgrimage to the West>, based on the history of a Buddhist monk named Tang, traveled to India to bring Buddhist sutras back to China, is a good illustration. Tang took three individuals for company, and managed their way to India. Monkey sun is the strong individual, and he is the one who gets most of the monsters killed and his boss saved, but without the other two “co-workers” help, he won’t be that powerful. It is the teamwork and the same clear goal- Go to the West, finally allow them get to India. This story best illustrates how individual and team perform differently and how they two are bind to each other. In addition, working together to achieve the same goal helps unify the group boost each individual’s performance as well as the team’s. Working as a team can be more fun than working alone. In conclusion, team work is based on individuals, while individuals can’t perform well without teamwork. On the basis of my above discussion, we can conclude that although businesses overemphasized the importance of teamwork over individual, we shouldn’t discard teamwork’s advantages. The assertion that the strong individual get the work done is too extreme. The ideal work setting for organizations would be a group with targeted goal and each individual working hard, contributing to the team.
