The author of the statement asserts that the importance of team work is overemphasized in business and organizations, because the strong individuals with the most commitment and energy are the real performer. To some extent, I agree that in certain circumstances, strong individuals are more efficient and effective than team work. However, in some other circumstance, team work improves the overall performance of an organization, avoids possible mistakes and achieves goals that cannot be achieved by individuals. Therefore, a cases-by-case analysis is necessary to determine that under specific circumstances, whether a business or organization should emphasize on strong individual or team work.
In the first place, strong individuals who have great commitment and energy normally respond to changes and make decisions more quickly and accurately than a team. Thus, an organization that often faces rapid changes or urgent events should focus more on the key individuals than working as a team. The emergency department of a hospital is a good example. A proper decision made within seconds by an experienced and committed doctor may save many lives. Can you image what will happen if a team of doctors take hours to discuss how to treat a patient heavily wounded in a car accident? Yet another example is a frontline soldier in a combat. What will happen if he has to discuss with other soldier to decide whether to fire?
In the second place, a team tends to view a problem more completely and make more accurate decisions than individual, because each member of the team has different backgrounds and may view a problem from different angle. As a result, organizations facing very critical and complex situation should focus on teamwork. For example, the strategic decisions of an international company are normally made by the a decision board that contains several members, because it is very hard for one manager to have a complete view on such a complex problem. In addition, team work enables exchange of information and ideas. Hence, individuals of the team can benefit each other and improve together. As a good example, researches in a graduate school of a university are often conducted by a group of researchers, so that each researcher can acquire knowledge from others. Further more, some task are too complex or too big for an individual to complete, no matter how talent and committed he is. Is it possible for one worker to build a Boeing 747 jet? In this case, working as a team is the only logical option and must be emphasized.
Last but not the least, it should be noted that a strong individual with the most commitment and energy does not necessarily mean that he can contribute to the organization effectively. If the person is not devoted into his work at all, his performance is highly unwarranted. Hence, organization should pay attention to an individual's interests and personalities other than his "strength", even if individual contribution has to be emphasized.
In conclusion, in some conditions, the "strength" of individual must be emphasized in an organization. However, in some other circumstance, working as a team is more proper for an organization and hence must be emphasized. There is no universal answer to the question of which should be emphasized in an organization. The answer can only be properly drawn by a case-by-case analysis based on the situation of an organization.
