Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government should require all young adults to perform some kind of national service, such as Military service or social work.
It is reported recently that a famous singer in South Korea tried to escape his duty as a soldier and thus was condemned nationwide, which also unfortunately interrupted his promising career. Is it erosion of personal freedom or barrier of personal development to fulfill some kind of national service, such as military service or social work , as far as young adults are concerned? Could young adults really learn something meaningful from their contributions? People’s standpoints tend to diverge towards this issue. As far as I am concerned, some obligatory service is desirable for both the nation and the young people, thereby making the society a better place.
First and foremost, social service plays a key role in cultivating decent, hardworking, responsible and constructive citizens for modern society. Military service trainings help young adults to get rid of some of their bad habits , learn some useful mechanical skills, develop the sense of cooperation and most importantly, can significantly enhance the young adults' identity with the nation, as well as the glory and honor ,which is definitely a meaningful and cherished experience for them. Moreover, participating in social work is not only necessary for helping those in need, but also provide a way for adults to experience more about the society. Once I served as volunteers in my community to make a survey of some newly moved residents. At the beginning, I could hardly imagine how time-consuming and pains-taking the job is because they came from entirely different backgrounds involving great demand for understanding of various cultures and communication skills. After three months, I found my own way of thinking is broader and more mature than ever before. Additionally, participation of citizen is without doubt the foundation for the future of each and every country. No countries could barely survive without the protection from the army, so that some of us have to assume the responsibility without excuses. Similarly, no countries could develop and prosper without social work , which helps to solve or at least reduce some serious social problems, so that some of us have to make our own contribution to the community. Yet on most cases, our human beings , to a large extent, have the strong propensity to act according tour short-term and self-interest, not to mention make voluntary sacrifice for the welfare of others. Some kind of coercion is necessary and reasonable.
Finally, an healthy interaction between young adults and community , or the nation. is essential for the development of the society. And as I have mentioned above, national service seems to be more of mutual benefit than mere sacrifice or national will, as well as a way for self-improvement, self-fulfilling and the real sense of achievement.
When it comes to the singer mentioned earlier, he might be a talented artist,but fail to live up to the honor as a responsible citizen.To summarize, national service and self development is not mutually exclusive , the harmonious combination of both serves as the foundation of modern society and modern citizen.
