agree with goodgoodstudy, choice D distorts the original meaning of the sentence by saying "is played by ...growth of ..." and that growth is "damaged and slowed growth". that's also what OG explains.

這裏我認為damage的賓語是forest，而不是growth。og也說

The corrected sentence must make clear that both damaging and slowing the growth of refer to forests.

意思就是說需要damaging should refer to forests, while slowing the growth of should refer to forests.所以，可以認為damaging和slowing the growth of是並列的。賓語都是forest。

我对b and e还是有疑惑。我觉得，b 显示这个damage or slow of grow of forests的后果已经造成了。现在没有达成共识酸雨是不是原因之一。而e选项是，作为一个general case来讨论，到底酸雨对雨林又没有破坏的可能。不知道我理解的对否，请大家指正。
