help with independent writing

I am going to take test within one week. Ask for your valuable advice!

College students should be required to take science course.

There is little doubt that it is quite important to study science for students throughout the whole world. In China, science is a required course in the middle and high school. Recently proponents of science called for the mandatory requirement into colleges. Personally, although science would benefit almost everyone who studies it, however, it is not wise to require all of students to take the subject, because it violates personal choice, brings negative influence to study plan, thus fails to reach the goal of school.

One reason that mandatory retirement is wrong is that it takes away individual's personal choice of taking science or not. Colleges students are not middle or high school students any longer and they have own rights to decide what subject to study. A person's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness( As written in the Declaration of Independence ) is a very special thing. Forced choice of course deprives them of their freedom to choose their line of study and prevents them from pursuing happiness.

Another reason is that mandatory requirement affects individual's time and arrangement, without consideration of their preference. If students are forced to take one science, then they lose the chance to take the course assigned on the same time. More than likely, they have to do the assignment after class, or spent time and energy to dealt with the exams, thus losing more time to study other courses

they may be more interested in or more relevant to their future job. Therefore, it is not fair for them to study a subject they already studied a lot in their lower lever schools, at the same time, to lose the valuable time to concentrate one area they like more.

In addition to the previous two points, there is issue of affectivity of policy. Since students are not motivated to study this subject, even if they are required to take the classes, it is unlikely that they would do well in the classes. I have the experience to study history, which I am not interested in but required to take it. I do not work hard on it at all and I go to take the classes to get a pass. Obviously that is not the aim of school. For school, it invests money and administration on the policy, but it does not work as it expected. Is it meaningful or wasteful for professors or students?

In conclusion, whether college students should take science or not should be decided by an individual's preference, study plan, motivation. It would also be wiser for modern schools to allow students to choose courses and make their own decision.
