you have to look at the percentage...it is true the probability that people from top schools get job offers from top firms and then are accepted by top mba programs is higher than those from second-tier schools. you cannot deny it. no need to complain it is unfair. you could have gotten a higher score in college entrance examination. cheetah talked about the maldistribution of quota among different provinces. yes, it is unfair, but there is no absolute equity everywhere. even in the u.s., top schools always have space for those kids with family legend. last time i met a guy who said he entered college in 1989, the year when all the beijing colleges suspended admissions from non-beijing places. he said he was ranked top 10 in his province, but he only went to shangdong university. fair? of course not. but fortunately many year later, this guy is no less than, if not better off than many top school students. there is always exception. if you are that material, whatever your background is, you will be successful. i used to get access to the student database of a top 3 school, and surprisingly found that most of the students came from ivy league, mit, or stanford. mba programs have their admissions formula. a good thing for chinese students is that the u.s. schools are not that familiar with china's universities. you could boast how good your school is...how niu b you are...but another thing is the admissions to a top school is not the end, it is just the begining. an mba from a top school does not guarantee anything. of course you will get better opportunity to find better job, but there is such a long way to go. even if you are fortunate to join a top firm, you will soon find that life is not easy at all. it is competitive to stand out as a non-native speaker, to be a small potato in a big company is not as exciting as it sounds, etc. whats my point? i just happened to take a look at the profiles of presidential candidates and found that most of them are from not-so-good schools. conclusion? even in the states where people value school names so much, i.e. you see all kinds of ranking every year, successful people dont need an top school degree to stand out. in china? the lower education you have, the more possibilities you earn big money, hehe. |
