The invention of the computer and the advent of the information ear are both mixed blessings. We have already been accustomed to the fact that a world of information is readily available in a keystroke. Nevertheless, we are baffled with tons of the undesired by-products associated with information explosion. So is the internet a blessing or a curse? As far as I am concerned, the merits of the internet far outweigh its defects.

The internet is a best support resource for the learning process. With the presence of many encyclopedia-like websites, such as wikipedia.com, I can find out an answer to a question that puzzles me instantly. Say, I want to find out more about the 1998 Far East financial crisis, all I have to do is to type the key word in, and then a variety of materials pertaining to that topic will appear. Another considerate and instrumental feature of the internet is that on each webpage, the relevant links are always listed, double click the link that interests me, I can refer to another pool of knowledge. Doing research via internet not only will I get a access to all the relevant academic articles, news reports, but also I can have a glimpse of the recently advanced theories concerning that topic, which the out-dated collections in the traditional libraries can never offer me.

Furthermore, the forum on the internet enables people, who share the same interests or experience similar challenges, to get together and communicate first-hand information with each other, irrespective of the physical distance that separates them. For example, in the days when my life revolves round preparing for the TOEFL, a forum called chasedream gives me immeasurable assistance, range from the reference book selection to the tips during the test. Hence, it is inconceivable for me to prepare myself for taking the TOEFL in such a short time without the information I got from the Internet.

Admittedly, the convenience the internet has granted us comes at a price.  The availability of such enormous information, some of which might be destructive in nature, such as pornography, the bomb-building instructions, and the doctrines of the extremists and terrorists, may eventually harm our society, especially our children who generally have impressionable minds. Moreover, the credibility of information on the internet is less regulated since the solving of this problem always transcends national borders and no national government can make a difference alone.

Another nuisance of the excessive information disseminated through the internet is the direct email marketing employed by many corporations. Since obtaining our e-mail address is often effortless, these companies just bombard our email boxes with all kinds of advertisements. These junk mails packed in email boxes seem compel us to absorb the information we do not need and, more often than not, we are helpless when confronted with this situation for we lack effective means to prevent this from happening.

In sum, while the vast information on the internet has posed a threat to our society and compromised our quality of life in a way; on balance, the access to information generates far more desired results, such as facilitating the research process and the communication of useful information among the members of a forum.
