非常同意chuneyu_lee的解释, 关于NGC 4258的那段说明正好证明了A是加强,而不是削弱. 作者关于NGC的那段话要表达的意思是：如果NGC的中心有星系的话，它们早就被撕裂了，所以NGC中心没有星系。而关于M87，skeptics提出的观点就是它的中心可能有星系。要支持这个观点，就要说明它们没有被撕裂，这正好就是A的意思嘛。

你这属于典型的生套答案,原文说的是undermine the possible explanation for the whirling gas in M87 that is mentioned in the last sentence of the first paragraph,那就是说的要削弱第一段最后一句话的意思嘛
