Hi, thanks for your patient and valuable help along side. I think you've already started school and could you tell me up to now, how do your percieved HBS as a business school? What are the THREE things you like most about HBS?

Three things i like most:

1) I feel very much respected and paid attention to --- the school takes GOOD care of its students in ALL aspects, from study to career, from academic service department to faculties.

2) I learnt that a friend in another top B school needs to pay about usd200 for books for one subject, here we don't pay a single penny for books, cases, and group meals.....I never see any school of this generousity.

3) Students here are very dynamic, flexible, enthusiastic, passionate, friendly, interesting.....by now i haven't met anyone who appears arrogant...which surprises me....

1. The people.  Fellow students, faculties, and staffs.  The energy level of each, the drive to do the best job that they can, and the willingness to help and share what they have.

2. The opportunities.  Speakers, information sessions, clubs, trips, resources, external networks, the list can go on and on.

3. Learning style.  The case method and learning teams.

who will you name for the best professors or which courses will you choose as the best in leadership and general management at HBS, compared to Michael Porter in strategy?  thanks

I don't understand what you are trying to find out.  Who we like best could be vastly different from who you like best.  How one professor teaches leadership could be different from how he/she teaches strategy.  What's behind your question?

Please check the 6th floor of this posting.

Choose the one that best matches your background and that you can provide the most effective and fit application.  Even though you don't choose career goal, I would suggest you show your thoughts on career in other essays, but on the other hand, if you have pretty unique career goal or convincing argument on your career, it might be a good idea to write in full career essay. Remember, essays are mirrors of yourself, you don't want to miss your uniqueness in the essays.

What would you like the MBA Admissions Board to know about your undergraduate academic experience?

http://forum.chasedream.com/dispbbs.asp?BoardID=13&replyID=2454982&id=264894&skin=0

I would make sure I answer the question.  You can talk about your master's work as an extension of your undergraduate experience but not as a replacement.

"activities that I participated in"你是谈了和学习没有关系的一些课外活动吗?

I think that's part of my academic experience but that's just my personal interpretation.

今年HBS essay 中增加了这样一问 'What have you learned from a mistake?'

Of course you may write about anything that you deem appropriate.  I'm not sure how effective it will be though, without the feedback and reflection process.  The moral of the mistake story isn't about what you learned but how you learn from mistakes.

谢谢 Yaoyao!! 但是你能解释一下 'what you learned from mistakes' 和 'how you learn from mistakes'的区别吗?

If you're talking about your own mistake, you'll naturally talk about the process, how you came to the realization (through feedback and self-reflection), what you learned, and how it affected you since.  It presents a full pictures of yourself.  If you're talking about learning from someone else's mistake, it's more nature to jump to the results and discuss the outcome.  At the end, the essays should illustrate who you are.

What is your career vision and why is this choice meaningful to you我在回答时,我的career vision 是不是一定要说的很详细,比如说要详细到我要从事eg.

Some people know exactly what they would like to do at where by when, some don't.  Everyone has different levels of specificity.   Articulate yours clearly and convincingly and you'll be fine.

2。What else would you like the MBA Admissions Board to understand about you?

Q1: no specific requirement on each achievement. Total should be within 600 word limit

Q2: make your own judgement, there's no standard answer to it.

I didn't look at your whole package, therefore, I can't make a conclusion whether it's a good idea to add or remove that essay. But I really suggest you talk to more people, and get a holistic view on your package, not on this particular "three-accomplishment" essay. At the end of the day, it's your overall package that matters.

Congratulations!  Of course we're happy to help, if you could elaborate on your request.  When is your interview?  When are you available?  What specifically are you looking for help on, that only a current HBS student can provide?

11/12 is a school holiday.  11/13 to 11/16 might work.  Please post some time slots in EST so we can respond based on our individual availability.

Yaoyao, It's soooooo kind of you. Please give me some time options you think is OK. My time is very flexible. Thanks.

Ok, what about 3:15-4pm EST 11/12?

...  My dear Yaoyao, do you really want me to get up at 2:30 AM? The time difference between Beijing and Boston is 12 hours! So if you can move it to some time between 8:00 pm to 12pm EST, or 9:00am to 12am EST, that will be perfect for both of us.  Thanks for your consideration and understanding. And thanks for your precious time. I owe you.

Yaoyao,

Sorry!  I did send out the time slots that you requested to the group but no one has responded yet.  It's a busy week.  Recruiting is in full swing and there are a lot of events lined up before Thanksgiving comes around.  Will let you know if I hear back from anyone!

Thanks very much! BTW, I heard that the interview from HBS is quite personalized to the applicant and usually 70% of the questions can not be prepared. Is that right?

Sorry, missed your question.  They will review your application detail prior to the interview but I don't know exactly what percentage of the questions you can prepare for.  It's probably different depending on the interviewer and what your application looks like.  Good luck!

Waiting is much more painful  in deed....Good luck!

HBS Interview

I got HBS telephone interview last week. And hope can receive HBS brothers' insight on interview. Can we keep in touch?

There's nothing you can do after completing the interview.  Just be patient and hope for the best!  Good luck.

Yaoyao, sorry for making you misunstand my status. I just received the invitation for interview and will complete it at the end of Nov. So I am pleased to have your precious advice about HBS interview. Time is flexible for me, so it would be great if you can find a time to communicate with me on line or over phone. Thanks in advance.

Could you post your questions here please so others can also benefit?  BTW, I'm not a HBS brother.  My general recommendations would be: do your homework, know your application, and practice if you can.  Good luck!

I am a lawyer working in a top3 local law firm in China and my concentration is IPO, M&A and private placement(eg.P.E). I am just wondering whether HBS admits lawyers in their MBA program? Thanks for your reply!

There have been lawyers and law professors in the program.  They will not exclude anyone based on their profession nor will they admit anyone based on their profession.

I've got HBS interview invitation and set the time on early Dec. It's phone interview with adcom.  Is there any difference between telephone interview and face-to-face interview with alumni? And, will the interviewer review all my application material in advance?  Thanks so much!

Congratulations!  That depends on your comfort level, whether you perform better over the phone or in person.  They will know your application inside-out so be ready for that, =)

It's not required (strongly recommended) so as long as you can demonstrate your ability to communicate in English (through GMAT/essays/recommendations), I won't worry about it.  Good luck!

thanks yaoyao!!!

You're very welcome, =)

Thanks a lot!!

The timing of submission doesn't make any difference as long as you submitted before deadline; HBS won't review earlier until after the deadline

2.Estimated rank among peers
4.Extracurricular Activities中还有一项叫all extracurricular activities since college,是填community service之类的东西吗?

1. I believe it said "high school" in our applications.  You should check with admissions office if it's unclear.

2. You don't have to make one up if there's no official ranking.  In fact, unless they explictly state that they would like an estimate, I won't provide one that could be inaccurate.

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extracurricular

Extracurricular activities are activities performed by students that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education... Such activities are generally voluntary as opposed to mandatory, non-paying, tend to be Athletics, social, and philanthropic as opposed to scholastic, and involve others of the same age.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Part_time

A part-time job carries less hours per week than a full-time job, and usually pays less than a full-time job.

I think any voluntary project that you did outside of your class work counts.  Any professional paid projects where you worked less than 40 hours a week would count towards a part-time job.

4. It could include any activity outside of your normal job duties.

1. Intended Post-MBA industry and function
Your ResponsibilitiesKey Accomplishments, Most Significant Challenge,  怎么感觉跟回答essay一样啊?~~~

Make your own judgement, that's all I can say.

Essay is just one piece of the whole package. Every detail matters in your application package. However, be meaningful about the info you fill in ---- Quantity doesn't mean quality.

Annual Revenue doesn't have to be exact number, a rough number will be okay, for example if your company generates 361.345Mn USD annually, it's perfectly fine to say 300Mn or 400Mn

I suggest you fill in your salary info, it's an important one, don't put an inaccurate number. Trust me, HBS will keep those information confidential, your salary information is safe here.

If it's a public company, everyone should know it.  If it's a private one and you truly have no idea, just say not available.
