WE ARE HBS CLASS OF 2009 CDERS!

Dear fellow CDers,

We are this year's HBS admits, class of 2009, and we are here to help you pursue your dream!

We hope you understand that we also have a life outside of CD, balancing between school, job hunting, social activities, not to mention all the exciting events that go on in our lives.  Please respect our volunteers who are generously offering their experience and insight and make the best use of their time.

  1. Do your own research and utilize the various resources available on CD and the internet.
  2. Read the application instructions carefully.  Requirements vary from year to year.  Do NOT rely on hearsay.
  3. Before you ask a question, please first look through the comments and questions others have already made and our replies, see if your concern has already been addressed.
  4. Please do not expect us to assess your chance of gaining admissions or succeeding in your career.  We can only tell you that everyone has a chance and it's up to you to make it happen.
  5. Respect each other, please refrain from making personal remarks.

Please also bear in mind that we do NOT work at admissions.  We were all applicants earlier this year and have just gone through the entire application process.  Our replies are not OFFICIAL statements, but PERSONAL opinions. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt and use your BEST JUDGEMENT.

Wish you all best of luck!!!

How to Prepare for the Business School Application Process (from HBS2U Newsletter)

We recognize that many of you are considering applying to business school in the coming year, for the class entering in fall 2008. Below are a few tips to keep in mind as you consider what business schools you might apply to:

    * Do your research (visit campus, explore Web sites, read articles, speak with alumni, meet with current students).
    * Determine for yourself what you want to get out of an MBA and prioritize program specifics (i.e., geographic location, class size, program length, learning model, faculty involvement), then pick schools that fit with your criteria.
    * Give yourself sufficient time to submit a thorough and thoughtful application, completing all sections: transcripts, recommendations, GMAT, work experience, community experience, and leadership experience.
    * Attend an admissions event! HBS will hold admissions events in cities around the world beginning in late summer of 2007 and continuing throughout the fall.

Background Information

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission, a candidate must have successfully completed the following: A degree program at an accredited U.S. four-year undergraduate college/university or its equivalent;
Link: http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/admissionsrequirements.html

Q:  Does the reputation/history or my undergraduate institution or company affect my chances of being accepted?
A: Our goal is to admit a class that offers a variety of perspectives. Therefore, we carefully consider individuals from a wide spectrum of academic and work experiences.
Link: http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/faq.html

Transcript

Q: How can I submit my transcript?
A: There are two ways to submit your transcript, either through a self-reporting Excel-based transcript form found within the application or uploading a scanned transcript. Please do not mail a hard copy of your transcript.

Q: Is there a minimum GPA requirement to apply?
A: No. Although our students often have competitive undergraduate GPAs, there are many other equally important components of the application. GPA is just one factor the Admissions Board uses to evaluate a candidate.

Link: http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/faq.html

Work Experience

Q: I am still an undergraduate student. How long do I need to work before applying? (from 2006)
A: Traditionally, we have admitted a small number of applicants directly from university each year. We strive to find outstanding leaders at different points in their professional lives. Some applicants may meet this criteria while still in or immediately following undergraduate school, while others may need several years of full-time work experience before they apply. We want outstanding applicants to consider Harvard Business School as an option when they feel that the time is right for them and they can demonstrate the criteria we are looking for.

Q: What is the average length of work experience? (From 2006)
A: The average number of years of full-time work experience for the class entering in fall 2006 was approximately four years. Please bear in mind that HBS does NOT require a minimum number of years' work experience prior to entering the MBA program, and it is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding to apply. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate strength in our criteria regardless of the number of years of their work experience.

Q:  What is the desired length of work experience you wish to see in candidates?
A: HBS does not require a minimum number of years’ work experience prior to entering the MBA program, and it is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding to apply. Successful candidates have the ability to demonstrate strength in our criteria regardless of the number of years of their work experience.  We believe our MBA Program can be impactful for students with as little as 2-3 years of work experience.

Q:  What constitutes work experience?
A: Work experience includes opportunities in which students have been able to develop their professional and leadership skills.

Q:  Are there specific types of work experience that will make me a more attractive candidate?
A: Rather than focus on specific categories of work experiences, applicants should focus on their roles, responsibilities, and what they have learned from the types of work experiences that they have been involved in. The Admissions Staff will look at the nature of the applicant’s work experience when evaluating the applicants’ ability to handle the academic rigor of our MBA program.

Tests

GMAT

Q: Is there a minimum GMAT score required to apply?
A: No. We accept applicants with a wide range of GMAT scores.

Q:  What is the average GMAT score for accepted students?
A: The Admissions Board hopes that all applicants will recognize the following:  the range of GMAT scores is very broad, that there is no "minimum" score requirement, and that the GMAT is just one piece of data among the many used to evaluate an application. The average GMAT score for the class entering in Fall 2006 was 707.

Q:  Can I list only my best GMAT score?
A: Yes.  We review only the score from a single test sitting that you present in your application.

Link:  http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/faq.html

TOEFL

Candidates who received their bachelor's degree from a non-English-speaking university are required to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and/or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Candidates who received a master's or Ph.D. degree from an English-speaking university are strongly encouraged to submit the TOEFL and/or IELTS.

The MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a TOEFL score lower than 267 on the CBT or 109 on the IBT from applying.

Scores from tests taken before January 1, 2006 will not be accepted.

Miscellaneous

Q:  What is the timeline for applying?
A: HBS has three application deadline dates.  For the class entering in 2008, the deadlines are:  Tuesday, October 2, 2007; Thursday, January 3, 2008; and Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Q:  When and how can I expect to hear back from HBS?
A: Notification dates are set according to each round.  For the class entering in 2008 notification dates are as follows: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 for Round 1; Wednesday, March 26, 2008 for Round 2; and Wednesday, May 14, 2008 for Round 3.

Q:  In which part of the application may I enter additional information, including special circumstances?
A: lease enter important information that you want the Board to know in the Additional Information section of the application.

Q:  How do I add new information if I have already submitted my application?
A: Once the application has been submitted, the Admissions Board is unable to accept application updates other than contact updates.  If invited to interview, applicants may inform the Board of updates at that time.

Q:  When I print the application in PDF format, parts of the application appear truncated, unclear and/or do not appear at all. Are these parts seen by the Admissions Board?
A: The Admissions Office receives the entire application in appropriate format and all fields are viewed clearly by the Board. The document that the applicant views is an unformatted version of the final document.

Q: Who should I contact if I have a question regarding my application status?
A: Any questions you have should be submitted to us via our on–line form. http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/faq.html

Q:  Will HBS provide feedback for students who have been rejected?
A: Due to the large number of applications we receive each year, we unfortunately cannot accommodate requests for personalized feedback on your application.  We receive 7,000 to 10,000 applications for approximately 900 places in the class, and therefore have to deny admission to many exceptional individuals.  Also, please understand that the decision of the Admissions Board is final, and we cannot advise you on whether or not you should reapply in the future.

Q:  How long can I defer my acceptance?
A: Candidates should submit applications only for the year they plan to enter the MBA program. Postponements and deferrals are rarely granted and are considered on a case-by-case basis. We may grant deferred admission to a limited number of college seniors who we feel would benefit from and contribute to the MBA Program after some full-time work experience.

Recommendation

Q: Who should recommendations come from?
A: The Admissions Board requests that of the three recommendations, two come from professional references.  Of these two, one recommendation should come from a current or recent supervisor. Recommenders should be individuals who know the candidate well and who can attest to the candidate's leadership ability.

Q: What is the process for recommenders?
A: Candidates enter recommenders' names and email addresses into their online application. Recommenders then receive an email with a link to their recommendation. The recommendations are submitted separately from the candidates' application and will automatically be included in the application upon submission. Applicants should not wait for recommenders to submit their recommendations before submitting their applications.

Q: Is the recommendation deadline the same as the application deadline?
A: Applicants should submit their applications as soon as they feel ready. Recommendations are submitted separately by the recommenders. Please bear in mind that it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all three recommendations are submitted online by the deadline date for the round in which the applicant is applying.

Interview

After your application has been submitted and reviewed, you may be invited to an interview. The interview is an indicator of interest, but is not a guarantor of admission; it serves as one element among many that are considered as we review your application. All interviews are conducted by invitation only, at the discretion of the Admissions Board. If invited, however, you must participate in order to complete the application process.

Interviews are conducted by the MBA Admissions Board or a member of our small alumni interviewing network. Interviews may be scheduled on campus, on the telephone, or in domestic or international hub cities.

Neither the timing of your interview nor its format - in-person or by phone — implies anything about the status of your application or affects your candidacy. Invitations to interview may be extended up until the notification date of a round and are a positive indicator no matter when you receive them.

Q: When should I expect an invitation for an interview?
A: Interview invitations are extended on a rolling basis throughout the course of each application round. The timing of your interview does not imply anything about the status of your application nor does it impact your candidacy. Invitations to interview may be extended up until the notification date and are a positive indicator no matter when you receive them.

Q: What should I expect for my interview?
A: Your interview will last approximately 30 minutes and will be conducted by a member of the MBA Admissions Board or one of our Alumni Interviewers.  Interviews may take place in-person or over the phone.

Q: How can I best prepare?
A: The purpose of the interview is to better understand you as an MBA candidate for our program.  We encourage candidates to relax and be ready to talk about themselves.

Link:
        http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/faq.html

Q: Has Harvard Business School always interviewed its candidates? (from 2006)
A: Interviewing has been an important component of our MBA Admissions process for several years. In 2002, interviews became a prerequisite for admission to our program: 100% of our admitted candidates are interviewed. Interviews are granted on an invitation-only basis.

Life at HBS

以下是引用robinst在2007-7-25 10:03:00的发言:

I have just arrived in Boston for one week, and hv started my pre-MBA Int'l class from Monday. A few feelings to share:

1) 3 cases a day, 8am to 5pm, is really hectic and intensive.

2)Most professors are great, but still i dozed off in a few classes i thought boring

3)There are very outstanding peer, but most are still very common people... So don't feel intimidated by the big brand.....We are all common people, who speak non-sense, feel confused occasionally, make logic mistakes in talking, ask silly questions.....

4)Most international students speak decent English, but still there are some who struggle. A few strugge to speak up in class even language is not a barrier.
