Grades are important to students, they are one of the important indicate of the students' study. Students with hard work and good performance deserve high grades. So, teachers would be bothered with the standerd they score their students. One suggestion is course grades should be based solely on exams, while another opoinion is that grades should be based on class participation than on exams. Though, both seem reasonable, I prefer the later one.
Admittedly, exam is a traditional way to test the ability of students. We are growing up with huandrands of exams. It has its reason: first, exams give all the students a fair opportunity to show themselves. What you have learned can be shown by the score you got. Second, it is much convenient for the teacher to make an exam, and it cost just a little time.
However, the exam is not the better solution concerning that grades should also show the class participation of the students. Obviously, exams just test a part of the material of the course and it's not compelete. There are some chances in which some lucky dog who do not study well but come to the questions they just revised the day before the exam. What is more, if the grades are only based on the exams, there will be a lot of student to skip the class, which actually lost the purpose the class. On the other hand, if the grades are based more on class participation than on exams, the students will attend the class even if they are not willing. But, they will find the fun of the class and study as hard as they can, Isn't it the aim of teaching? Furthermore, the students will try to get involved in the class to get higher grades and thus the class will be lively and active.
To sum up, concerning the advantdges and disadvantages of these two ways of grading, the grading based more on class participation are better and efficient both to the teacher and the students.
