I want to work in the finance area, either in a large corporation or an investment bank. I will pursue a MBA. However, I feel like without strong communication, writing and critical thinking skills, promotion to higher level management role for a Chinese professional will become rare. My question is that whether it is worthwile for me to get a joint degree jd/mba, degree that is offered in such schools as Yale.
Yale has an accelerated joint program (3 years). Dlynn has mentioned a good point that there is no need to go for a law degree just to improve something other than legal knowledge. However, what I really appreciate the legal education is its logical and analytical reasoning skills, which are heavily valued in the business community. If I'm ambitious enough, I'd like to take advantage of this education opportunity and challenge. I also understand that Yale law degree is more pretigious than its business counterpart. However, given the rigorous curriculum of the joint degree program and the high placement rate in key positions in big corporates, I think it's very worthwhile. My strategy is to apply for Yale MBA first, and once I matriculate, I'll talk to the academic advisor regarding the joint degree during my first year, and hopefully my LSAT then could ace. It's just an idea. I'll certainly weigh my options when the time comes
my personal take is that yale law is way harder to get into than yale MBA. if you are only seeking more advanced skills in writing and oral communication, given the sound english ability you showed in your post, law school is not really necessary. it does look good in the resume, yet it's hard to get through law school without being passionate about it, let alone yale, the most prestigious one on earth.
almost all top business schools have JD/MBA program, except Sloan since MIT doesn't have a law school. it takes at least 4 years and tons of money. not sure whether it's worthwhile.
If you can get an offer from Yale law school, you don't need a MBA degree to get a decent job.
If you can get an offer for a Top bussiness school, you don't need a JD degree to get a decent job.
If you wanna use yale law school as a writing and communication training school, I don't know whether you are insulting YLS,or those who take YLS as their dream school and those who darenot take YLS as their dream school.
re #6: Yale's MBA/JD joing degree program allows you to finish the MBA degree in one year instead of two, which means you've got to spend 3 years in law and another year in business. here is the introduction: "The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) is offered by the School of Management. Normally a two-year program, the M.B.A. may be earned with only one additional year of course work by joint-degree candidates who are students at the Law School. Students may apply to both the Law and Management schools simultaneously or to one school during their first year at the other." this is normally the case for joint programs. and i strongly agree with #9. Yale Law School is the last place where students go to polish their communication skills.
