is there any consulting firm covers retail field business that is good in your eyes?please recommend some.no matter foreign invested or not.

BCG is doing pretty well in this field. I guess McKinsey is always strong.

Don't spend too much time on those local consulting firms if you are commited to do top-tier MBA...it will ruin your career...maybe you will consider after 5 yrs in Roland Berger, ATK, etc, but not in the begining...

Thank you for your advise buddy. But would you please let me know what do you mean "RUIN MY CAREER"?

I think everyone who wants to join consulting field may have a dream of such firms as BCG,but I think it is a little bit far away from me at the moment. But anyway, that kind of firm is my objective.

Thank you in advance.

no offense to those small firms and to your awareness of difference between dream and reality.

But in some sense, there are huge differences between consulting firms. After all, anyone can setup a firm and title himself or herself "consultant". However, in my personal opinion it is the industry where you should start as high as possible. If you are in a lower-tier firm, in terms of size, reputation, revenue, etc, you will find it very difficult to get into a high-tier firm, even more difficult than fresh MBA graduates. That´s because people tend to associate your ability directly with the firm, no matter how you might be outstanding in that particular firm. It is baised, of course. But there might be reasons to be so...

On the other hand, you really need to think about why consulting? "Consultants" might look cool, but it is just another way of doing business. There are so many dirty and ugly things beyond those beautiful and fancy presentation...If you really like this kind of job after getting to know much more about it, you should target at top-tier firms. Otherwise, getting into an industry and doing something more detail-oriented might be better.

In my personal opinion, those local consulting firms are usually setup by previous consultants in big company. They focus more on a very niche market, and usually relying on the previous relationship the founders have built in other companies...there might be some exceptions and as far as i know sinotrust is pretty famous. But in terms of career development, it would be better to try to start in bigger and more famous firms...especially if you are already thinking about MBA in very good schools like HKUST

Above is just my observation, not my experience. For your reference only...

Thank you very much for your comment.

One of the reasons I choose consulting as my goal is that I like the working style.I like to be "the third eye".I may have more motivation if I don't have to do the repeat job day after day.Secondly,I am like a semi-manager(not vice).I've got 2 helpers and I am trying to build a team for some projects.

During my daily work,I am fond of doing some process building/reengineering job. After finishing a task,I always sit down, have a break, try to make a process diagram and try to analyse if there are something I could improve. When I get through with that,I try to make a concluding in my mind or by written.

Unfortunatly,my college is not that good and my company I am serving for is not that famous even it is one of the most successful retailers in China within this field. It is a little bit hard for me to join the top-tier consulting firm now because as I know, those top firms like BCG are very serious on school if the exp of indicates is not good.

Do you have any suggestion for me?My plan was/is to make some acheivment in years and try to apply for MBA of HKUST.

Two quick suggestions:

1) Get into a top-tier school, either in Asia or US/Europe

2) Get to know more about consulting in the school

I cannot comment too much on your existing capability or your company. But from what you said, you def need to know more about consulting, and business school is a good place to start.

Thanks for your suggestion.

One more question, would you please introduce some more consulting firms which are good(not top ones) in your eyes?

I think you have some sense of how to be a consultant, you like to do analytical work even it might be out of your working range, I understand and appreciate your wish to join in this industry, for you are chasing this because of your real interest, that is much better than those who just take consultant as sth could bring higher status or much money, this industry gotta take more people like you but I also think what zhenhaowu has suggested really make sense.

the reality is if you want to get a higher start-point and wish to have some real experience, maybe a MBA is of necessity

Thanks for caring my problems.

In fact,I am collecting information of the programs so that I can apply for a MBA program of 2008.Is there any idea of which school can help me be a consultant?(course/pro.team/club/intership/on-site study/...)Such as HKU...

No matter it is an Asian or an European school.

I plan to make further study in a bs maybe in the future since i am still struggling for a master in Germany, engineering, not my preference, I think you could take bs in Europe into consideration, i mean, to avoid over competition in US bschools, but I suggest you leave out German B-Schools haha. but frankly speaking, BS in europe always take you time and great efforts to overcome the language problem.

actually i would suggest you apply for b-s in HK. but it also doesn't guarantee you a job placement in consulting firms.

at least find a path with wider perspectives, in case you don't get the consultant job you still have other chances.

good luck

我可以說句話嗎

如果已經有3+ yrs of 業界背景的人真的想透過MBA進 Top consulting firm 從associate做起

最好是能讓自己擠進Top15 US schools+ Insead or LBS
