no offense to those small firms and to your awareness of difference between dream and reality. But in some sense, there are huge differences between consulting firms. After all, anyone can setup a firm and title himself or herself "consultant". However, in my personal opinion it is the industry where you should start as high as possible. If you are in a lower-tier firm, in terms of size, reputation, revenue, etc, you will find it very difficult to get into a high-tier firm, even more difficult than fresh MBA graduates. That´s because people tend to associate your ability directly with the firm, no matter how you might be outstanding in that particular firm. It is baised, of course. But there might be reasons to be so... On the other hand, you really need to think about why consulting? "Consultants" might look cool, but it is just another way of doing business. There are so many dirty and ugly things beyond those beautiful and fancy presentation...If you really like this kind of job after getting to know much more about it, you should target at top-tier firms. Otherwise, getting into an industry and doing something more detail-oriented might be better. In my personal opinion, those local consulting firms are usually setup by previous consultants in big company. They focus more on a very niche market, and usually relying on the previous relationship the founders have built in other companies...there might be some exceptions and as far as i know sinotrust is pretty famous. But in terms of career development, it would be better to try to start in bigger and more famous firms...especially if you are already thinking about MBA in very good schools like HKUST Above is just my observation, not my experience.
