PS is your personal statement. You can write whatever you think is good to your application.
While essay is to answer a specific question asked by the program.

and PS is required for master or PHD program, mostly the case.

while essay is mostly for applying MBA

I'm currently applying for PHDs in both US and Canada, so my writing would be in the form of a PS? UBC gives several questions and requires kinds of essay, anyway. I'm a little cofused.
