Dean Hubbard had his first Town Hall Meeting yesterday. Below is a summary for those of you who missed it:
General Number of GMAT test-takers is up CBS applications are up relative to peers Job market is great, salaries up Deans from the Top Business Schools met; recent discussion among these schools: 1) Expanding “global footprint” 2) Curriculum changes 3) Concern about supply of faculty since the number of business PhDs is low and there’s competition with the private sector to get them
Current/ongoing Goals for CBS: 1. Curriculum changes and study group emphasis and training; addition of master classes 2. Culture-need to work on strength of community within school and network with alumni 3. Branding/image – working with an agency to position CBS as the place to best take advantage of and prepare students for a changing global world 4. Money – need it to keep up with peer schools; record year last year · New Princeton Review guidebook says if you're thinking about CBS the only other places you should consider are H/S/W 5. Facilities – Uris isn't on par w/ competitors’ buildings. We need a new building and Dean Hubbard wants a building/ complex on CU’s planned Manhattanville campus. It should be much bigger, with possible residential offerings. But he knows we need to make this space better for at least the next 5 yrs – expand study space and small group rooms, reduce congestion. These are the priorities he’s determined but he wants to hear from students. Misc.: · Dean Hubbard wants to work with us on the Deli issues and says CU dining services is responsive · Communication – Dean Hubbard wants to see students more; looking at possible breakfast events for that purpose · Wants feedback on improvements for this building (suggested here: rooms between U142 and U301 sizes, phone booths for private/quiet calls, better upkeep of facility – fix broken chairs) · Pan-European alumni event for 700 next week, Pan-Asia event in Hong Kong planned for March ‘08 Elaboration on Branding: · New web site in the works – it needs to attract B-school-aged people and be more user-friendly · Logo re-design · Ads promoting MBA and EMBA programs · Begin to roll out in February Questions from students: · Career advisor availability problem raised – Gina Resnick and staff are sure there are open slots · Is there a plan to increase size of school? We can't consider this in current facility. It doesn’t sound like Dean Hubbard wants to anyway, but it would be a more formal decision if we had a bigger facility. · What are the possible core curriculum changes? A faculty committee is looking at flexibility, but there’s a need to balance that w/ the cluster system. · Outlets in library? There are many new ones on the mezzanine level but chances of more aren’t good because of cost and structural issues with the library being over the gym. This is an ongoing challenge. · Operations and Macroecon to be offered in the fall if we want to defer either this spring · Academic credits – it’s possible to have it approved to take fewer credits one semester and more another Changes to Bidding: 1. Only pay market clearing price 2. More rounds of bidding – can drop courses between rounds and get points back 3. Get all points at once Coming soon… 4. Higher bids get waitlist spots 5. Option too bid on all sections/profs or just one |
