题目: Why should we go to university?
More and more people are attending university to meet the requirement of modern society and the job market nowadays. Most students may have not thought of “why go to university” before they enter college. I think it’s necessary for us to think over this before we go to college in order to find out does it worth to spend a big sum of money to study in university. In my opinion, attending college does not only ensure us knowledge, but also acts as a transition between the absolute academic environment of high school and the society. It benefits us a lot because we can get more experience and meet people with different backgrounds as well as study knowledge. Centuries ago, colleges are exclusively accessible to the rich. People who attended universities do not have to worry about their lives when they graduated. At that time, subjects in the universities were mostly in academic areas, such as arts, philosophy, literature, theology etc. But in modern times, universities add such more practical subjects as engineering, computer and architectonics. Only very few of the students in such areas could do further study after graduate and become scholars or scientists. Even some more academic subjects have integrated some practical courses to meet the demand of the job market. Students who do not attend college and go to work directly after high school may find some difficulties to face a brand new environment of the society. In this aspect, university serves as a preparation of the students for their future work and becomes more necessary for us to enter. Some people may say that we can also get practical skills from “skill schools”. Admittedly, these skill schools may impart us more skills and experience than university. But if we read the “Job” column of a newspaper, we may find such requirement of many companies: ‘a bachelor or higher degree is required’. Universities do not only give us knowledge, skills and experience, but also, apparently, a diploma, which means an access to more decent, better paid jobs. By this mean, it is likely to be compulsory for us to go to university. I once heard a student complain: ‘One of my friends who go to a skill-school has found a well-paid job, but I’m still worrying about the tuition and still have to depend on my parents’. Are the above said all we can get from university? I do not think so. We can meet different people with different backgrounds in university, who may help me a lot both in the university and in the future. More and more MBA programs have added ‘alumni’ in their advertisements to make them more competitive, because alumnus is playing a very important role in modern business world. Knowing these all above, I think we can give a clear answer to the question that whether we should attend university. The knowledge, experience, capability and alumni which you get from a university will finally pay back your tuition and several years of time.
