Instructions to Candidates Prior to Start of Test
Please be aware that all candidates will not begin the Speaking section of the test at the same time. Other candidates may be speaking while you are testing. If you think you will be distracted, we suggest you wear your headphones during the entire test session.
Follow the instructions on the screen. Be sure that your microphone is properly positioned and adjusted to allow for the best possible recording. Speak directly into the microphone and in your normal speaking volume.
Raters have been trained to ignore irrelevant noise when scoring speech responses. They focus on the speaker's words and screen out background noise.
Important:
Your identification will be checked before you are admitted. The name given when you registered must match the name on the identification document(s) you will present at the test center. If your primary or secondary identification contains diacritical accented characters that are not reflected in your test registration, you will be permitted to take the test. If you arrive at the test center without the required proper identification, the test center administrator will not admit you and you will forfeit your test fee. All test takers in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan must use valid passports as their ID documents.
If testing OUTSIDE your country of citizenship, you MUST PRESENT YOUR PASSPORT as your primary identification document (citizens of European and Schengen Zone countries, see special requirements on page 9 of the TOEFL iBT Information and Registration Bulletin). If you do not meet this requirement, ETS may automatically cancel your test scores. All test candidates should read the Identification Requirements section on page 8 of the Information and Registration Bulletin.
