明天就要飞香港了,后天考试。4年前托福作文得了5.5,这次也没准备,这程度能得几分啊?
4. It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?
I am always amazed when I hear people saying that knowledge gained from books are more important than that gained from experience. Even if one does not know from concrete examples that knowledge gained from experience is more important, one could deduce if from general principle that it is indeed important to gain knowledge from experiences. By contemplating from the following examples, I will elaborate my point of view in details.
Obviously, as the well known saying goes: experience is the best teacher. We gain most of our knowledge through experience during most of our life. A young boy learning how to swim is just a case in point. He practices how to move his arms and legs, and try to balance his body. Sometimes he may even face the danger of drown in the water. Only through this procedure he can gain knowledge of how to survive in water, consequently, he learns the skill of swim. From this instance, we know that knowledge gained from experience is by no means a trivial one.
In addition, we will be impressed more deeply because experience always shows us with the real context. For a student taking the chemistry course, an experiment will help him or her to a greater extent in learning chemistry knowledge. A student can learn the attributes of a certain substance, such as color, smell, by observing in an experiment. In this way, the student can bear in mind with what he or she had seen for a much longer time. On the other hand, if he just read about such knowledge in a book, he or she will never have a concrete feeling about it. Therefore, knowledge gained from experience play an important role in impress a person to a greater extent.
Furthermore, we can not neglect the importance of knowledge gained from a book. Since books tell a person in a more systematic way about a certain topic. And such a certain topic tends to be organized in a structured manner that we can learn about it much more efficiently. For example, a book on economics can display the framework to the reader, thus save the reader a great amount of time in grasping the essentials of economics. This knowledge can not be gained easily through mere experiences. In this aspect, book displays an important role. In conclusion, it is indeed more important to gain knowledge from experiences, because we are not engaged in reading for most part of our lives. Meanwhile, we can not ignore the importance of gaining knowledge from books, since a book could be a good teacher telling us a better structured set of knowledge more efficiently.
