Actually the answer in prep is C.
Though I don't quite understand what means "consititute", we can rule out the other answers:
For E, the author didn't mention a word at all about what the definition really is. He just presents the debates and we can not see the attitudes through the whole paragraph.
For D, if it's true. Then there must be such statements as"Therefore the true definition of the phermore should be..." However, there is obsviously no evidents.

也就是 认为p may not involves conscious的证据 在于 VNO和大脑的联系被main olfactory system切断了。

但后面说了 VNO和p其实关系不大（注意but while），不是所有p都在VNO处理，也不是VNO处理的东东都是p。直接削弱了这个证据。于是p is less likely to be unconscious, so more likely to be conscious(the same as odorants)

感觉在作者没有明确说一个conclusion的时候，non-native speaker确实不太习惯于体会态度。就好比中国人如果说：有人说这个市场不太繁荣的证据是它和最近的居民区中间隔着一条河。不是所有这个市场的顾客都是那个居民区的，那条河上有几座方便的桥。    -- 我觉得老外看这句话的态度也要琢磨很久。

同意e，primary purpose 跟第一句话一点关系都没有，是根据整篇文章，揣测作者的intention，最后一句话和一个example 已经很好说明了作者的intention了

老外和我们的思维方式不一样吧
写这种文章肯定要条理清楚，要么归纳要么演绎，怎么可能揣测作者的意图
如果要揣测，那每个人都会有不同的揣测方向，还做个p！

E的确太牵强啦。说E对的人无非就是说文章最后的有几个example是反驳了反驳P和O相同的观点，但真的是这样吗？最后的例子顶多是对第一层反驳起怀疑态度罢了，绝谈不上是推翻。如果说作者怀疑那么证明P和O不同的事实的有效性，我可以理解，但是偏说成是作者在否定这个有效性，我看真的是过了。
我在想，一个正常人，在考试的时候也不会选E的，就算感觉C不对，也不会冒这么大的风险选E。
关于constitute有be这个意思我也赞同，这点高中的时候就学过了。
相比之下，就这篇文章而言还是C更靠谱一点，如果说标准答案真是E，那么这题真是suck······
