In NYC, I would expect your living expense to be around $1,200/month for a decent life. After tax refund, $20,000 might leave you $18,800. After insurance and fees, it might be $17,000. So, you still have bit more savings.
Check Craigslist to gain some ideas regarding the rent market. Basically, rent might be $700 (not for studio or 1 bedroom though) for a decent sharing, obviously you can squeeze yourself to save money. Metro Card is $76, cell phone is $50, and food expense varies. NYC is the best location to buy fashionable dress, but you cannot fina an outlet.
