Superoldman,
I would like to share with you my thoughts or experences in the application process.
1 Why MBA
As you said that your goal for MBA is to expand your vision and international expereince, MBA in US definately suits the end.
2 Age is a problem?
Sure, especially in the top 10 schools because of the fierce competition. I'll bet that you will get an opposite view from any admission officers because they don't want to be regarded as taking a discriminated practice AND they won't reject two obvious benefits: "contributions" ( application fees) and an increase in applicants' numbers. To overcome this "weakness", you should convey much stronger work experences or values than someone in their 20s do.
3. EMBA or MBA.
EMBA is part-time program, and most EMBA programs have classes at weekends in every other week. In this situation, it is very hard for you to establish friendship with your classmates. Besides, the tuition for EMBA is much higher. If you go to US, MBA is the only choice.
4. Which school.
If you have more energies and time to apply for more schools, you could do so. In my case, because of the time restraint, I applied for five schools, two in the top 10 ( dream schools) and three between 20-30 ( backups) according to 2004 BW ranking. The results are that I was denied by the two in top 10 and admitted by the three with scholarship or fellowship. Three suggestions are:
1. Don't take for granted about the top 20 schools. You need to consider the different culture of the school and pick one that fits your background. For example, many people may suggest that Wharton prefers older applicants. In fact,Wharton, in most part,is a student-run school. In this situation, your application is more likely to be viewed by a student, most of whom in their 20s, rather than by someone form the admission committee, most of whom in their 30s. If you think that your story is strong enough, you could ignore the diffence in readers, otherwise you may need to do more detailed research to expand your admission chance.
2. Some schools between 20 and 30 have strong desire to compete with their peers for applicants denied by top 20 schools and could give out a generous scholarship.Considering your goal for MBA, it would be much better to study in US with tuition waive. In this situation, you only need to pay for living expenses, which are a little bit higher than those in China.
3. You could refer to BW and USNews rankings, as well as WSJ's to make up your list. You may need to have a backup list since re-application will not work for you.
" Better late than never".
Good luck!
